That passive-aggressive email from your boss at 5:55 PM. Your shoelace snapping right as you\u2019re walking out the door.<br \/>\nThere are days when a slow, zen run just doesn&#8217;t cut it. Days when yoga makes you want to scream in the silence of the studio. Days when you need something more primal. You need to break something.<\/p>\n<p>Good news: we\u2019re here for that, too. And we have the perfect exercise.<br \/>\nThey\u2019re called <strong>Med Ball Slams<\/strong>, and they consist, quite simply, of picking up a heavy ball and slamming it into the ground with every ounce of malice in your body.<br \/>\nThe best part? Not only is it therapeutic like few other things on earth, but it\u2019s also one of the best exercises for developing the power you need to fly on race day.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"need-to-vent-grab-a-med-ball-and-slam-it\">Need to Vent? Grab a Med Ball and Slam It<\/h2>\n<p>Forget controlled weights, slow tempos, and &#8220;time under tension&#8221; for a moment. The goal here is (controlled) violence.<br \/>\nMed Ball Slams are the fitness equivalent of a primal scream, but with the added benefit of not scaring the neighbors and toning your abs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a simple, safe, and accessible movement. You don\u2019t need Olympic technique like in a snatch or clean and jerk. You just need a medicine ball (preferably a soft, non-bouncing &#8220;slam ball&#8221; so you don\u2019t break your nose\u2014trust us on this) and a sturdy floor.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"slams-the-move-that-builds-explosive-power\">Slams: The Move That Builds Explosive Power<\/h2>\n<p>When you lift the ball overhead and prepare to slam it, you are loading your body like a spring, extending your ankles, knees, and hips. But if you want to do it right (and save your back), follow this technique.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The Load:<\/strong> Start with the ball between your feet, feet shoulder-width apart. Squat down, grab the ball, and bring it overhead, fully extending your body. Imagine trying to touch the ceiling with the ball. You should be a straight, taut line.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Slam:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t just let gravity take the ball. <em>Drive it down<\/em>. Use your abs to violently flex your torso forward, like a standing crunch, and follow through with your arms until the ball leaves your hands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Follow-through:<\/strong> Send your hips back and bend your knees slightly to absorb the movement. Don\u2019t round your back too much.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Reset:<\/strong> Pick up the ball (squatting with your legs, not bending your back!) and repeat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The secret is using your body weight and core strength, not just your triceps. It is an aggressive gesture that tricks the brain into thinking you have &#8220;fought&#8221; and defeated the threat. After a well-executed set, you will feel a wave of immediate relaxation.
