Here is why we struggle to toss them and how to finally let go (while doing some good).<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost every runner holds onto dead shoes they will never wear again.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not hoarding; it\u2019s an emotional attachment to the memories those shoes represent.<\/li>\n<li>Shoes are silent witnesses to specific chapters of our lives (both good and bad).<\/li>\n<li>To let go: take a photo, thank them, and recycle them (via programs like Nike Grind) to turn them into playground surfaces or tracks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There is a corner in every runner&#8217;s home that is off-limits to the rest of the family. Often, it&#8217;s a high shelf in the closet, a box in the garage, or, for the brave, a dedicated shoe rack.<br \/>\nResting there are the &#8220;dead&#8221; shoes.<\/p>\n<p>They are shot, the midsole collapsed years ago, the upper has a hole right by the big toe, and the smell&#8230; well, let&#8217;s just say it isn&#8217;t lavender. Yet, they are still there.<br \/>\nEvery so often, someone asks: &#8220;Do you still use these?&#8221; And you, lying and knowing you&#8217;re lying, reply: &#8220;Yeah, sure, for yard work&#8221; (even if you don&#8217;t have a yard).<\/p>\n<p>Why do we do this? Why is it physically painful to throw away an object that is technically trash?<br \/>\nBecause to us, they aren&#8217;t trash. That\u2019s the pair you trained in for your first marathon. It might be warped, but looking at it brings back those freezing winter mornings.<br \/>\nThat blue New Balance? That\u2019s what you wore when you changed jobs and were incredibly stressed, and running was your only outlet.<br \/>\nThat adidas worn down at the heel? It was there when you hit your 10K PR and felt invincible.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes absorb our lives. They have been silent witnesses to chats with friends, solitary cries, and our best ideas.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-psychology-of-hoarding-why-we-bond-with-a-worn-out-sole\">The Psychology of Hoarding: Why We Bond With a Worn-Out Sole<\/h2>\n<p>Psychologists would say we project our identity onto objects. For a runner, shoes are an extension of the body and will.<br \/>\nKeeping them is a way of telling ourselves: &#8220;Look what I did. Look how far I went.&#8221; It is tangible proof of our discipline and our history.<br \/>\nIn a digital world where everything is intangible (Strava data, Instagram photos), a worn-out shoe is physical, dirty, real proof of our effort.
