My watch searches for a GPS signal on the porch, blinking endlessly. I’m freezing, so I start running, convinced it will catch a signal on the way. Nearly nine miles later, with salt caked on my temples and calves burning with lactic acid, I check the display: 1.2 miles logged, then nothing. A broken GPS track ending right at the bridge.

My first thought wasn’t about my tired legs.

It was about the data file. I held an undocumented effort in my hands, and for a few minutes, that run actually felt lighter than it was. A well-trained part of me, conditioned over the last decade, has learned to consider an effort real only if it leaves a shareable track.

The Obsession With Public Tracking

Strava printed its community’s oldest inside joke on a t-shirt: Strava or it didn’t happen. The phrase started as self-deprecation, the kind of banter you exchange at the coffee shop after a Saturday long run. Printing it and selling it changes the category: it goes from a joke to a badge of honor. You wear it, laugh at yourself, and repeat it—and jokes repeated long enough eventually stop being jokes.

The app isn’t the problem. Strava remains an excellent analytical tool, and I use it: it tells me how my training load distributes over a four-week block, how my track repeats compare to March, and exactly where my pace tanked during a tempo run I thought was steady. Those numbers are honest and useful, and they make my training better. How the platform rewrote the social rules of running is a story we’ve already covered.

What broke sits one level above the software. It happens at mile six, when I realize I’m mentally drafting the activity title. It’s pushing that last mile repeat way harder than my coach prescribed because my followers will see the splits tomorrow. It’s a conversational pace run turning into a tempo run, cutting a recovery jog short, or hiding a down week entirely because it looks weak on the feed.

Athletes have become the narrators of their own effort. The physical act and the reporting of that act have fused. It’s hard to tell which comes first. It’s an unpaid, self-assigned part-time job.

Effort Exists Even in Silence

In the hours following those nine miles, my body did what it always does. Muscle fiber micro-tears signaled satellite cells. Protein synthesis stayed elevated for a solid 24 hours, repairing and thickening tissue. Mitochondria got the signal to multiply. The capillary network began to densify around the hardest-working muscle fibers. Tendon collagen initiated a painfully slow reorganization process measured in months, not weeks.

None of these biological processes checked the feed.

The body rebuilds in the dark, while you sleep, and it doesn’t ask anyone for permission.

Adaptation is inherently private. It happens under the sheets between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, when human growth hormone does the dirty work while you’re completely oblivious. It happens while you eat, drive, and sit in meetings. When you walk down the stairs the next day and feel that sharp stiffness just above your knee—that’s the only notification that actually matters. And it doesn’t come with a thumbs-up.

My most memorable run this year happened in June on a river trail. The rain started halfway through, and my phone was dead in my back pocket. A dog barked from a farmyard. The smell of wet dirt rose from the fields. At some point, my shoes stopped fighting the puddles and just splashed straight through. No data. No audience. I came home with that thick, tired satisfaction we all know, and that satisfaction belonged entirely to me.

Breaking Free From the Algorithm

Comparison itself is an ancient, useful habit: watching better runners teaches you how to run better. What changed is the scale and the relentless continuity. The feed puts your average Tuesday easy run right next to the absolute best days of forty different people, all simultaneously peaking. Nobody posts the easy run they bailed on at mile four because of a side stitch or cramp. The algorithm doesn’t judge; it just sorts. And that sorting alone does all the psychological eroding.

Motivation research explains this erosion perfectly. In 1999, Edward Deci, Richard Koestner, and Richard Ryan reviewed 128 experiments on the effects of external rewards. They found that expected, tangible rewards consistently undermine intrinsic motivation, while unexpected positive feedback strengthens it. The catch is how you perceive that feedback: as information or as control. A kudos that arrives after the fact is information. It feels good. A kudos you anticipate beforehand—the one that gets you out the door—has already hijacked the nature of your run while you’re still lacing your shoes.

You can dial this back without dramatic gestures. Just set your activities to private for a month. Observe what happens to your drive to run. It’s a free, surprisingly uncomfortable experiment. Or leave your phone on the kitchen counter and run a loop you know by heart. Count streetlights instead of mile splits. On vacation, without a watch, many of us do this naturally and realize we run much better. Or simply keep one session a week off the public record. Pick your hardest workout. Bleed for it, and let nobody know.

Guarding your progress is a sign of respect for the work that built it. Broadcast your progress while it happens, and you burn it fast. It gets spent in thirty seconds of someone else scrolling, and it’s gone. Progress kept to yourself accumulates. It settles. It builds real depth. Your body has always worked this way: lasting strength builds slowly, out of sight, under the skin, while the surface looks exactly the same as yesterday.

So go hurt in secret. Run five brutal hill repeats on a dark November Tuesday night. Let the cold dampness sink into your bones while the streets are empty. Come home with freezing hands, and don’t tell a soul.

Nobody will give you a thumbs-up for those hills. You’ll just feel it weeks later, halfway through a race or on some random road, when your lungs hold up just fine. And you won’t need to explain to anyone why.

An undocumented run feels completely different than a logged one, highlighting modern running culture’s biggest flaw.
