The thud, the lock engaging, then… nothing. Nobody is speeding down the avenue. The corner construction site has been dead for ten days, the crane frozen with its arm pointing toward the river. The coffee shop’s security gate is pulled down, a taped-up sign fading in the sun. The only things still working full-time are the AC units dripping onto the sidewalks, leaving dark spots at regular intervals down the entire block.

I make it twenty yards down the street, and I realize I can actually hear them dripping.

The Echo of Scorching Asphalt

The 7:00 AM heat doesn’t beat down from above. It rises. The asphalt spent all night holding onto yesterday’s heat, and running on it feels like stepping onto a griddle someone turned off two hours ago. You feel it in your calves before it hits your face. The old blacktop, patched with shiny black scars, softens just enough that your soles stick for a fraction of a second longer than they should. It’s a new, tacky sound that simply doesn’t exist in the winter.

Then there’s the smell. Hot tar, rubber, the sweet stench of dumpsters that aren’t being emptied quite as often. Every now and then, drifting from a cracked-open lobby door, a draft of cold bleach hits you like a slap of relief, only to vanish three strides later. I run past the plaza fountain and turn the tap: the first burst is lukewarm, almost hot, the pipes baked beneath the pavement since June. I wait. A few seconds later, the water turns abruptly ice-cold, as if a piece of winter is still hiding underground, left behind while everyone else went to the beach.

The sunlight washes colors out instead of illuminating them. It’s flat and white, turning brick facades into flat surfaces without depth. A double-parked car’s windshield shoots a blinding glare straight into my eyes for three solid seconds. I run on the shady side of the street—which, in August, is a three-foot strip that shrinks with every block you conquer.

But the heat isn’t what grabs my attention. It’s the acoustics.

Every footstrike bounces off the building facades and echoes back to me a half-second late. I’m running around an 8:30/mile pace—a rhythm I know by heart—but for the first time in months, I’m actually listening to it from the outside. The heavy downbeat of my right foot landing slightly harder than my left. The slight scuff of the sole just before toe-off. The two-beat breathing rhythm falling out of sync as the road inclines toward the overpass. I make these sounds year-round. Eleven months out of twelve, the city drowns them out with its own noise, and I wander through it convinced I’m running in silence.

Eleven months out of twelve, the city drowns out the noise we make. In August, it hands it back to us on a half-second delay.

Naked Architecture: The City Without Traffic

I stop at the main intersection out of pure habit. The light turns green for nobody. It turns red for nobody. The cycle runs on an empty loop—eighty-seven seconds engineered to clear a traffic jam that doesn’t exist today. As I wait, I look up. I realize there’s a stunning Art Deco building right above the pharmacy, complete with intricate iron balconies and gargoyles under the roofline. I’ve run past this corner for six years.

Running is the most honest way to read a city’s urban design. In August, that reading becomes almost embarrassingly clear. Without rows of double-parked cars, you finally see the true, massive width of the avenue. Without the crowds, you see the public square for what it is: a concrete basin designed to hold a mass of people, surrounded by porticoes built to channel a flow of life that simply isn’t there today. You only see the raw skeleton of a city when it’s completely empty, just like you only see a load-bearing wall when you strip away the drywall. It’s ironic: real estate developers sell cities using deserted, flawless architectural renderings. For eleven months, reality proves those renderings wrong. But for two weeks in August, the renderings are dead on.

Pop culture knows this feeling perfectly. Think of the opening scenes of Vanilla Sky, with Tom Cruise running frantically through a completely deserted Times Square. That metaphysical, empty New York is a flawless, unusable movie set—beautiful but stripped of its purpose, existing only for someone to run through it. The way running redesigns our perception of urban space stems from this exact intuition: moving on foot forces you to read the city at a speed that actually lets you see it. When the city is empty, that reading encounters zero obstacles.

Meanwhile, the scale of sound shifts. An empty bus rolls by fifty yards away, and I hear it coming three blocks early. I hear the pneumatic hiss of the doors opening at a stop where nobody gets on. A distant siren wails near the freeway. The cooing of pigeons hiding in the shade of a balcony—a sound that usually doesn’t exist, buried under the low, constant hum of traffic. The city isn’t mute. It just turned down the volume on its lowest frequency layer, revealing a secondary soundscape that was there all along.

The Privilege of Moving Through the Void

I use the word privilege, but I need to check myself, because it’s a slippery term.

The August city isn’t actually abandoned. On the second floor of a building with closed shutters, a woman cares for someone who can’t travel, and I hear her speaking softly through an open window. At the corner, outside the grocery store, three delivery drivers wait in the shade, staring at their phones. A utility worker in a high-vis shirt is fixing a storm drain, his back already soaked with sweat at 7:45 AM. The driver of the empty bus is working his normal shift, just dealing with an extra twenty degrees in the cab.

The privilege isn’t the empty city itself. It’s the ability to move through it without having to, surrounded by people who are moving because it’s their job.

That sounds like a guilt trip, but it’s actually the part I find most fascinating. Because when you choose to run through a landscape where everyone else is working, your body stops being the main character and just becomes part of the scenery. Nobody watches you. Nobody judges your pace. The act of running loses its social function and strips down to exactly what it is: weight shifting forward, lungs organizing breath, core temperature rising and demanding management. It’s the same pure stripping-down you experience during a pre-dawn summer run, except here, there are no other runners. They’ve already finished, or they aren’t coming out at all. The latitude of solitude is absolute.

I didn’t do anything to earn this. It’s just a glitch in the calendar, a two-week fold in time where the machine slows down. Meanwhile, my body works exactly as hard as it always does. Actually, harder: in this heat, my heart has to split its effort between pumping blood to my muscles and my skin. My pace drops by 30 seconds a mile without asking permission, and by the end of my 10K (6.2 miles), my shirt weighs twice as much as it should. The suffering isn’t making me a better runner. It’s just making me incredibly present.

I head back down the side of the avenue where the sycamore trees still hold a patch of real shade. I hear my footstrikes bouncing back from the building fronts, slightly out of sync, as if someone has been tailing me a half-step behind since I left the house. I stop at my front door. My legs stop moving, but my breathing doesn’t.

And for a split second, the echo keeps coming. Two more phantom steps, then a third, before finally dying out against the hot brick wall. The city finishes its run right after I do.

In late summer, the city empties out and reveals its true skeleton: massive avenues, deserted squares, and traffic lights cycling for nobody.
