The only lever that actually works is what you look at and how, not how much willpower you throw at it.

Upward social comparison is automatic: it fires in a fraction of a second, and the rational correction comes later, if it comes at all.

The active-passive model separates silently consuming content from interacting with it, and the two have different effects on how you say you feel.

Recent research pushes back on the idea that passive scrolling is uniformly bad: the effects vary a lot from person to person.

August packs similar images into the same few weeks, all touching a dimension that applies to everyone. The useful lever is changing what flows through your feed, not disappearing from it.

You open your phone to check a train schedule, and within three seconds you’ve seen a cliffside view, a table set for sunset, and someone’s boarding pass for a flight that lands roughly 1,200 miles from here. None of it had anything to do with you. But a measurement has already been taken.

Why Comparison Fires Before Reasoning Kicks In

In 1995, Daniel Gilbert and his colleagues at the University of Texas published a series of experiments on how comparisons form. People compared themselves even to individuals they knew were irrelevant to their situation, and only afterward, if they had spare mental bandwidth, did they mentally “undo” that comparison. The authors concluded that comparison is a spontaneous, low-cost, unintentional reaction, while correcting it takes attention and energy.

That’s why knowing how the mechanism works doesn’t switch it off. The comparison has already happened by the time you notice you’ve made it. When the point of reference sits above us on something we care about, that’s called upward social comparison: you look at something you perceive as better than your current situation, and your current situation drops a few notches in how you see it.

Passive Scrolling and Active Engagement Are Different Experiences

The most widely used framework for reading the relationship between social platforms and well-being is the extended active-passive model, described by Philippe Verduyn, Nino Gugushvili, and Ethan Kross in 2022. The distinction is simple: active use covers anything that creates interaction (commenting, replying, sending a direct message), while passive use covers consuming content without exchange (scrolling the feed, watching stories, reading updates).

According to the model, active use builds social capital and a sense of connection. Passive use, on the other hand, supplies an enormous amount of material for comparison, and because what people post is skewed upward, the balance tends to run negative. One detail that rarely gets mentioned: these platforms were built to get people interacting, yet most of the time we spend on them is passive.

What the Research Says, and Where It Disagrees With Itself

The overall numbers are smaller than the public debate suggests: a 2020 meta-analysis found a modest negative correlation between social media use and well-being, around r = -0.10.

The picture frays even further at the individual level. A study in Scientific Reports followed 63 Dutch teenagers for one week, taking six measurements a day for 2,155 data points total: after passive use, 44% of participants felt neither better nor worse, 46% felt better, and 10% felt worse. The authors describe these as person-specific effects, meaning individual ones: the average hides people reacting in opposite directions. A teenage sample and a short window mean the data doesn’t settle the question, but the mechanism it describes holds for adults too.

Verduyn himself points to where the difference lies: it matters how much the content touches something relevant to your self-image, and it matters whether it tells a story of success or of stumbling. A beach photo barely registers for someone who just spent three weeks at the beach. It hits a lot harder for someone who pushed their vacation to November.

The Seasonal Factor: August Concentrates Everything

The first three weeks of August compress into a few days the kind of image density the rest of the year spreads across months. It’s not just the quantity that changes, but the composition of the feed. Everyone posts the same kind of content at the same time, on a dimension that touches anyone with a job and a calendar.

There’s a second, less obvious effect: August also brings more free time and less structure to the day, which means more chances to scroll through the empty moments. Anyone staying in the city, anyone who broke summer up into two-day micro-trips, or anyone who pushed everything to September stays exposed longer to material that speaks directly to them.

Strategies That Don’t Require Disappearing

Deleting the apps for three weeks works for as long as it lasts, and it comes with a cost that rarely gets discussed: it also wipes out the part that builds connection, the replies, messages, and conversations. The active-passive model points to a more workable path: changing the composition of your use rather than zeroing it out.

Change the Flow, Not Your Willpower

Shift the weight toward active use. If a photo hits you, respond to it: a direct message, a concrete question about that place, a comment. Direct interaction is the mode the model links to a gain in well-being, and it has a useful side effect: it turns a perfect, abstract figure into a person you’re actually talking to.

Turn down the feed’s self-relevance. Muting for thirty days the accounts that post about whatever’s stinging you right now isn’t a judgment on those people. It’s a choice about what enters your field of view during a specific stretch of time. Every platform offers some form of temporary mute that doesn’t break the connection.

Give the app a job before you open it. Opening the app for a specific reason (replying to a message, looking something up) and closing it once that reason is done cuts down on drift-scrolling, the mode where comparison works undisturbed and where reaching for your phone turns automatic.

Choose your moment. Mentally correcting a comparison costs resources, and late at night or after a hard day, you don’t have many left. The same content lands differently at eight in the morning than at midnight. And if what you’re after is a break, a real break doesn’t run through a screen.

The Question to Ask When a Photo Sticks With You

When an image stays with you longer than expected, stop on a single question: if no one could see it, would I still want it?

It’s there to separate two things comparison keeps glued together. If the answer is yes, that photo just handed you useful information about a real desire, and the next step is practical: when, what it costs, what it takes to make it happen. If the answer is no, you borrowed someone else’s desire along with their photo, and you can hand it back. The question doesn’t remove the irritation in the moment. It gives it a direction, which is the one thing irritation on its own doesn’t have.

Every scroll delivers someone else’s sunset, someone else’s beach.
