If it’s a road shoe, it slides on the loose gravel and sends every stone straight up. If it’s a mountain shoe, the moment you’re back on asphalt you’re landing on a handful of rubber points instead of a full outsole, like a soccer cleat on a gym floor. This is where a lot of us run most of our miles, and it’s the ground the shoe wall has never had a section for. Until now.

The Zone That Never Had a Name

Cycling has had three families for years: road, gravel, mountain bike. Running kept two, and anyone crossing pavement, park, dirt and easy singletrack inside the same run picked one of them and lived with the compromise.

In March, Salomon introduced the fourth version of the Aero Glide in two variants, one for road and one badged GRVL, and the move read like the opening of a segment of its own. The object already existed: road to trail had been circulating for years as a description, with vague edges and no shared criteria for what belonged inside it. Splitting it off into a declared segment gives the customer a sharper picture.

Calling it gravel doesn’t add technology: it adds a boundary. And whoever draws a boundary also sets the criteria everyone who enters later gets judged by — in a store the question stops being “which trail shoe is least stiff” and becomes “which gravel shoe is best.” Tellingly, the people who’ve previewed next year’s collections write that nearly every brand will have a gravel or hybrid model, and that the two who moved first, Salomon and Craft, start ahead.

What Changes Underfoot

The most visible difference is in the lugs. A gravel shoe has deeper ridges and more rubber than a road shoe, but stays well short of trail numbers: the Salomon Ultra Glide 4, a trail model, runs a full-rubber outsole with 5 mm lugs, while a racer built for low-technicality ground like the Nike ACG Ultrafly 2 drops to 3.5 mm. Gravel sits below that threshold.

Higher up the shoe, the logic runs against lightness. Across the two versions of the same Aero Glide, the GRVL takes the quick-lace system from the mountain models, a less flexible upper and more reinforcement at the toe to keep mud and dust out; the road version keeps traditional laces, a softer upper and less reinforcement, so it doesn’t gain weight. Protection gets paid for in ounces and in airflow.

The midsole numbers tell the clearest story, and they’re the ones I’d look at first. Models presented as door to trail or gravel sit inside a narrow band: 35 mm at the heel and 29 at the forefoot for the Nnormal Cadi and the Mount to Coast H1, 33 and 27 for the On Cloudsoma, 32 and 28 for the Altra Experience Wild 3+, with drops between 4 and 6 mm. Those are everyday road shoe numbers. Long-trail models sit above: 38 mm at the heel for the Nike ACG Zegama 3 and the Norda 055. Weight follows the same line: 9 oz for the Cadi and 8.8 for the H1, against 11.3 for the Zegama Trail.

Less midsole under the foot also means less lateral leverage when the surface gives way, and on loose gravel that counts as much as the outsole pattern: it’s the same reason your footstrike needs recalibrating on gravel trails instead of leaning on traction alone. What’s missing is the protection of a mountain shoe: on roots, rock and serious elevation change, the Canadian report says it without hedging — get a dedicated trail shoe.

Where It Works and Where It Doesn’t

The criterion is simple and it holds. If you run almost entirely on pavement, the road version stays the better buy. If you alternate pavement, dirt, gravel and low-technicality trail inside the same run, or you want one shoe for everything, a gravel shoe is an excellent call.

Two cases remain where it becomes the worst compromise available. The first is technical ground: on loose rock, roots and steep grades a gravel shoe leaves you exposed on both protection and grip, and the difference between grade and technicality is what to weigh before buying. The second is fast running on asphalt: at pace, lugs give back less contact surface and a duller feel.

Anyone who already owns a road shoe and a trail shoe and rotates them sensibly covers a nuance with gravel rather than a gap. Anyone running on a single pair gains something concrete.

How to Tell If Your Loop Is a Gravel Loop

Take your last four runs and count the minutes spent off pavement. Under 10%, a road shoe is enough. If they pass a third of the total and that third has compact ground under it — dirt roads, levee paths, crushed gravel, park trails — you’re in the zone this category describes. If it’s made of loose rock and roots, the middle category doesn’t solve the problem.

The second question is about pace. On compact mixed ground almost all of us run in cruise mode, and in that gear the extra millimeters of lug cost little and give back security. Anyone using those stretches for quality work, intervals on fast dirt, will feel the difference in the opposite direction.

what to look at in the store before the category convinces you

Ask which road model it comes from: many gravel shoes are variants of an existing shoe, and knowing the close relative tells you how it will behave on pavement better than any description of the segment. Then put the gravel model and the trail model from the same brand side by side and look at the outsoles from behind: rubber coverage and lug height are often the only physical difference between the two. Run a finger along the edge of the upper at the toe, where you can feel the reinforcement against pebbles and mud.

For decades the shoe wall had two sections.
