That’s the stated mechanism of the practice, with nothing spiritual attached.

A word works when it tells you nothing. The ones that name the result you’re after send you straight back to the problem.

Ten to fifteen minutes a day for three or four weeks. Below that threshold there’s nothing to evaluate.

You sit down meaning to stay still for ten minutes, and forty seconds in you’re back inside yesterday’s conversation, the one you would have ended differently. You return to the breath. Half a minute later you’re there again, same sentence, same answer you never gave. After a week of sessions like this, the conclusion looks obvious: meditation isn’t for you.

The Silence Where Thought Works Best

Before you file it away, it’s worth knowing that sitting in silence is the hardest condition anyone can practice in, and almost never the one to start from.

The mind has a verbal channel. It’s the one reading you this sentence right now. Stop using it for a task of any kind and it stays on, available, and it finds something to say within seconds. A thought that spins in place doesn’t need favorable conditions to work. It gets them precisely when you strip everything else away.

In September that empty moment shows up more often. The light runs out earlier, evenings stretch out indoors, and the free space grows at exactly the point when the list of things to pick back up gets longer.

What a Repeated Word Does

Give the verbal channel a job that keeps it busy: a short word, repeated silently, with no deliberate breaks.

Try it now. Count out loud from one to ten and, while you count, run your phone number through your head. You can’t. That small jam is the entire mechanism of the practice: repetition occupies the system that produces internal speech, and while it’s occupied, the sentence that’s been circling for three days has nowhere to land.

The most important rule follows from this. The word earns its place through how it sounds and through how little it tells you. A syllable built on an open vowel holds up for hundreds of repetitions without wearing out. A word thick with meaning stops being a sound after twenty repetitions and turns into a subject: you weigh it, you argue with it, you build a line of reasoning on top of it, and the channel you meant to occupy is full of your own words again. The advantage of Sanskrit syllables has nothing to do with spirituality. In English they mean nothing, and the absence of meaning is precisely the requirement.

The rhythm can lean on the exhale or run on its own. What matters is that it stays the same for the whole session, because a rhythm that shifts asks for attention and pulls it away from where you need it. If you’ve already tried moving attention onto the body, you’ll recognize the underlying logic: you hand attention a job small enough to sustain and continuous enough to leave no room for anything else. With a word the job is lighter still, because you never have to remember where you got to.

Choosing Your Own Anchor

Pick a one- or two-syllable word that describes nothing about your life, and keep it for a month.

Sounds that close on a vowel work: “oh,” “om,” “so,” “ah.” A common word works too, as long as it’s inert, with no story attached. The ones that send you back to the problem are the ones that name the result: “calm,” “peace,” “enough,” “it’ll be fine.” Repeat “calm” for two minutes and at some point your head answers back, because a word like that is a question in disguise. It asks whether the calm has arrived, and the answer is almost always no. Same effect with people’s names and with lines of encouragement, which are made of the very thinking you’re trying to step away from.

The test lasts ten breaths. If after ten repetitions you catch yourself commenting on the word, drop it and move to the next one. If nothing much happens, you’ve found it. Then stop looking. Switching anchors every session costs more than a mediocre word kept for four weeks, because a word works once it stops being a choice.

The First Three Minutes, When Your Head Restarts Every Ten Seconds

At the start the repetition breaks constantly, twenty times in three minutes even, and that’s the norm for the first week. When you notice, pick up from the next repetition without starting over and without commenting on the break: the comment is already thinking, and it costs you more than the distraction it meant to correct. If the mental word won’t hold, whisper it just above your breath for the first minute. Moving lips and tongue makes the break obvious immediately and shortens the return, and then you can go back to silent repetition. The number of breaks drops on its own by the second week, and it drops sooner if the session always happens at the same hour.

How Much to Practice, and What to Expect

Ten to fifteen minutes, once a day, at the same hour, for three or four weeks before you decide whether this practice is any use to you. Under ten minutes the repetition barely has time to settle, and judging a five-minute session amounts to not having done one.

In people without a diagnosis, the measured effect on tension and mood ranges from small to moderate. In practice that means the return shows up outside the session — in how easily you cut off a loop of thought while standing in line at the checkout — more than in the ten minutes spent meditating. The session itself is often boring, and that’s fine. Boredom is the signal that the verbal channel is doing something uninteresting, which is exactly its job.

One caveat matters here. If the recurring thought fills the whole day rather than its empty moments, if it has lasted weeks without easing and steadily reduces what you’re able to do, a repeated word is the wrong tool. That’s the situation where talking to a professional is worth more than any practice you run on your own.

Sitting in silence is the place where a recurring thought does its best work.
