Wednesday’s run slid to Thursday, Thursday’s to Friday, and by Saturday morning the week has two workouts instead of four. The math you do at the window is always about the water on your skin and almost never about what’s on the other side of the glass: empty paths, nobody watching, an hour when pace stops counting.

Then there’s the practical side, which weighs as much as the other. In wet clothing your body cools far faster than it would in dry air at the same temperature, and the critical moment comes afterward, in the minutes when you stop.

The Evening Nobody Else Is Outside

The park at six thirty on a Tuesday evening in September, in the rain, is a different place from the one you know. No dogs on leashes, no strollers, no groups of five walking abreast across the path. There’s one sound, water hitting your hood and the leaves, and it covers everything else: traffic recedes, voices disappear. You run inside an acoustic bubble that doesn’t exist in any other season.

The crowd disappears, and the comparison goes with it. On dry September evenings the park is full of people running, and every pass, made or absorbed, is a data point you log whether you want to or not. Rain zeroes out that flow of information.

It also zeroes out the obligation to perform. In the wet your pace gets worse for reasons that have nothing to do with you: your feet get heavy, your soles slip, a headwind cools your legs. Nobody looks at that file expecting a number, including you. The run starts already absolved, and that changes the way you run it: slower, more distracted, your head going wherever it wants instead of auditing your stride every quarter mile.

The relief arrives later, and it’s the part nobody factors in at the window. It has little to do with the training itself and a lot to do with having done an unpleasant thing you’d planned to do: the week stays standing, and the voice that negotiates a postponement every single day loses an argument.

Your Body With Water on It

A wet shirt works like a cold compress: it keeps pulling heat away even when your muscles are producing less of it. Soaked clothing and wind are among the factors that accelerate heat loss the most during exercise, far more than the temperature you read on your phone. Fifty-four degrees in the rain and fifty-four degrees dry are two different conditions.

While you run, your body compensates: peripheral circulation drops, blood stays in the core, and your hands and feet pay for it first. Hence a practical consequence almost nobody applies: tie your laces, straps and shoulder harnesses looser than usual, because flow to the extremities is already reduced and extra compression makes it worse.

Dress for the Session, More Than the Thermometer

Decide the workout before you open the closet. The heat you produce depends almost entirely on intensity, which is why clothing gets chosen on the content of the session: an hour of easy running and six repeats with long recoveries call for two different setups. In interval work the cold arrives during the recoveries, when you stop producing heat and you’re already soaked: in those minutes, walk or jog rather than standing still waiting on the watch.

Visibility and Wet Ground

In the rain you see worse and you’re seen much worse: the light fades earlier, windshields are streaked, headlights erase the outline of a shape. Put your reflective material on the parts that move, ankles and wrists. It’s the alternating motion that a driver reads as a person from two hundred yards out, while a pale motionless patch stays a patch. Fluorescent works in daylight, reflective works in the dark, and at dusk you need both.

The ground asks for a correction just as simple. Crosswalks, manhole covers, tile and the first fallen leaves lose grip unevenly, and you go down at the point where the surface changes. Shorten your stride, land with your foot closer under your hips, slow down before turns, don’t trust curbs.

The First Ten Minutes After You Get Home, the Part People Underestimate

When you stop, heat production goes to zero while the wet clothing keeps working: your core temperature falls for several more minutes after your last step. Strip everything off the moment you’re inside, before your messages and before stretching, which in soaking clothes is the most efficient way to get cold. Dry your hair, put on something warm, drink something hot even if you aren’t thirsty: cold blunts the thirst signal. For your shoes: pull the insoles, open the upper wide, stuff them with paper and keep them away from radiators, because direct heat dries out the adhesives and stiffens the materials. They’ll still be damp the next day, which is the most concrete argument for keeping two pairs in rotation.

The calculation you run at the window is always about the water on your skin, never about the empty paths and the one run all year where pace isn’t a judgment.
