Every time I decide to make space I look at them, put them back in the box, defer the decision to the next season.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-kilometers-that-arent-in-the-app\">The Kilometers That Aren&#8217;t in the App<\/h2>\n<p>Scrolling your phone screen shows straight lines, heart-rate graphs and tidy hourly averages filed in an aseptic archive. The shoes on the floor show a different substance, made of dried mud stuck in the grooves, rough asphalt that&#8217;s planed the tread, dark traces that summer storms fixed forever in the fabric weave. That pair with the faded upper held through the months when I ran every evening at eight. The other pair, with worn laces, reminded me of another phase in my life. Digital sensors quantify cadence and elevation gain, ignoring the precise reason a human being crosses the threshold. Physical memory stays glued to the deformed rubber, tangible witness to <a href=\"https:\/\/runlovers.it\/en\/2026\/runs-that-stay-in-memory\/\">runs that remain in memory<\/a> precisely through the matter that slowly gave way under impact.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-versions-of-ourselves-we-dont-want-to-dismiss\">The Versions of Ourselves We Don&#8217;t Want to Dismiss<\/h2>\n<p>Throwing away an object like that produces sharp friction. The person who deformed that sole ran with different anxiety, a heavier step, maybe an illusion that today has transformed into structured habit. Keeping those warped forms certifies that person existed, proving the load of those cold afternoons held tangible weight. That structure held fragile tendons and thoughts, functioning as a dam against daily disorder. The moment they land in trash, the material witness of that specific resilience vanishes too. You&#8217;re left alone with your present version, who goes out in intact shoes, reactive, unmarked and bereft of prior history.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-pair-i-let-go\">The Pair I Let Go<\/h2>\n<p>I take in hand the oldest pair, the gray one with the ankle collar worn to the plastic support. I slide my fingers inside: the insole is glued, carved by the exact impression of my foot, rigid as dehydrated leather. This pair finished its task when I understood <a href=\"https:\/\/runlovers.it\/en\/2026\/when-running-becomes-identity-perception\/\">when running stops being effort<\/a> and becomes an indispensable daily habit. I place it atop the box lid, away from the shoe rack. The other two pairs return to the bottom, in darkness, to guard their motionless space. This one goes in a bag and I carry it to the waste bin.
