Your spine has lost mobility after days spent hunched in front of a screen. You need to restore movement in the precise places where human physiology allows it.

Where Your Back Rotates

The spine possesses dramatically different mobility degrees depending on the segment. The lumbar zone, engineered for stability and load management, has negligible rotational range. Forcing twisting motion in the low back generates only disc compression.

The pivot point sits in the thoracic spine, behind the ribs. The mechanism works exactly like a spiral staircase—each vertebra completes a microscopic fraction of rotation against the one below it. The final amplitude you feel from the outside equals the sum of these consecutive micro-movements.

Lengthen Before You Rotate

The mechanical rule that can’t be broken requires making space. You inhale and lengthen your spine upward, increasing the distance between vertebral discs. You exhale and rotate your thorax using the space you just created.

Seeking rotation while your back is bent immediately blocks joint movement and dumps tension on the wrong tissues. This breathing principle guides every millimeter of postural progression.

The Sequence

Hold each position for five to eight complete breathing cycles. Build the angle gradually, resisting the temptation to use your arms as aggressive levers to push past the natural limit of the joint.

Supine Twist

Supta Matsyendrasana, supine twist. Back to the floor, arms spread in a cross. Bring your knees to your chest and let them drop to one side. Gravity does all the work. If your opposite shoulder lifts off the mat, reduce the leg angle by tucking a pillow under your knees.

Seated Twist

Parivrtta Sukhasana, simple cross-legged twist. Ground your glutes to the floor. Place your right hand on your left knee and your left hand on the floor behind your pelvis. The back hand acts as a vertical pillar to maintain your spine’s axis.

Quadruped Twist

Parsva Balasana, thread the needle. Start in a tabletop position. Slide one arm under your chest perpendicular to your body until your shoulder and the side of your head rest on the floor. Keep your pelvis still and perfectly aligned over your knees.

Lunge Twist

Parivrtta Anjaneyasana, low lunge twist. Back knee on the ground, front foot firmly planted. Bring your hands together in front of your sternum in a prayer position. Press your elbow against the outside of your front knee. Use the contact between elbow and knee to drive your chest upward and avoid collapsing your weight onto your thigh.

Standing Chair Twist

Stand sideways next to a stable chair. Place the foot on the near side on the seat. Rotate your torso while gripping the backrest. This is an excellent piece for expanding mobility, particularly useful to add to the seated yoga you already practice.

The Five-Minute Version

When time vanishes entirely, pull out the supine twist and practice it at the start and end of your day. Two minutes total is enough to send a mobility signal to your nervous system and rehydrate the connective tissues of your back.

When to Skip or Modify Them

Twists operate exclusively on osteoarticular mechanics. The idea that these poses massage your liver or detoxify your body has no anatomical basis. Your liver does its job; yoga does its job.

With acute pain, diagnosed hernias, or disc issues, stop and consult a medical professional before applying asymmetrical loads to your spine. During pregnancy, perform only open twists, always angling your torso away from your legs to leave proper space for your abdomen and eliminate compression along your body’s midline.

A desk-stiffened back unlocks by working thoracic spine mobility.
