The first time I participated in a trail running race, I realized that the whole time I had two questions in my head:
\n1. What did I come up with?
\n2. Where do you buy all this cool clothing?
\nThe first question remains unanswered to this day.<\/p>\n

Then-after two pasta dishes and two beers-I realized that there was a third question that had lain dormant in the previous hours and that I was growing more and more curious about: How do you organize such a competition?<\/strong> From logistics to budget, it seemed like an impossible task in every respect.<\/p>\n

In this area there are the big races: internationally renowned athletes, thousands of participants, dozens of sponsors, an inducement of hundreds of thousands of euros. And then there are the small races: these are precisely the races that often require the most effort to organize, because a very small team (in some cases almost a one-man-band) has to take care of everything.<\/p>\n

I met Giuliano Obertelli<\/strong> a couple of years ago, just at the Ferriere Trail Festival<\/a> he organized. Then in the past few months I happened to run with him, and then I thought it might be interesting to turn my curiosities into a useful chat for everyone.<\/p>\n

The interview<\/h3>\n

SL<\/strong> Ferriere Trail Festival, how and when did the idea come about?<\/p>\n

GO<\/strong> The idea was born in 2015, in fact, perhaps earlier. I started doing my first trail races in 2013, and having been born and raised in Ferriere, it was immediate for me to imagine the pleasure of a competition on those trails so dear to me.
\nI used to buy shoes and trail clothing at the historic sports store in Piacenza, owned by a close friend: so it was in between shoes that I told him about this dream of mine. He himself would later become our first sponsor.
\nThe next step was to propose the idea to the town’s Pro Loco, and everyone was enthusiastic about it (I guess there are not too many entertainments in charming Ferriere, ed.). I finally identified a newly formed Piacenza sports club as the ideal partner for organizing this whole new adventure. So in 2017 we ran the first edition of the Ferriere Trail Festival.<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> Let’s talk about the new TVGT101 project, a 101-kilometer holy monster: if I’m not mistaken, it was plotted in 2020 but everything has been sent to next year, tell us about it.<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>I had from the beginning the desire to make a very long track. However, I preferred to be cautious, starting with shorter routes that were easier to manage. After running the FTF for three years over the 20k, 31k and 54k distances I felt that the gear was starting to hold and that I could finally think about my ultra, realizing my desire to connect the Nure Valley to the nearby Aveto and Trebbia Valleys.
\nIt would have been too ambitious for “little people” like us to do everything right away. As you already know, the 101k route was mapped out in 2020 and was supposed to be staged in 2021-we realized, however, that it would be too great a risk to play the debut card this go-round, given the complexity of the current pandemic situation. The path is there and we are ready for next year.<\/strong> Meanwhile-to complicate things a bit-in October 2020, a flood of the Trebbia River collapsed a bridge over which the 101-kilometer race must mandatorily pass. To date, it has not yet been restored.<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> Organizing such a race takes a lot of effort: time, money, people. How does it work?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>If you want to do it seriously, without endangering athletes and regardless of the length of the routes, this thing requires all the commitment you can muster from whoever is with you on the project. In our case there are only two of us.<\/strong> Throughout the year, we take care of everything related to the race, from bureaucracy to finding sponsors: because registration revenue alone would never cover all the costs. Then, about a couple of months before the race, we start going out on the trails in inspection. After the winter season we immediately start looking for friends and volunteers to make the trails passable. We usually manage to recruit 4-5 people to help us, without their help it would be impossible to do everything<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> Is there anything that went wrong in the first edition? Any contingencies that you simply hadn’t thought about?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>I will tell you an anecdote, which makes us smile even today. Part of the 54k course runs for several kilometers through beautiful meadows frequented by dozens of grazing cows (in previous editions the race was held in late July). Lo and behold, in 2017 our bovine friends ate most of the marker bands we had hung on the trees the day before! Fortunately, in the last control, the night before the race, we noticed this and spent the night re-tracking that part of the course. This experience has taught me that we are always the hosts of the land and not vice versa.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> A piece of advice to those who would like to try their hand at trail organizing?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>What I feel like saying is that on your own you won’t get anywhere. The complicity and cooperation of other people who believe in the project as much as you do is crucial-because setbacks, stress, and fatigue are demotivating and can lead you to give up. It is also necessary to know the area and its inhabitants very well because, as these competitions are often held in remote locations, one must be well received and not impose oneself. One point on which I am very strict with our organization is cleanliness: within a few days after the end of the race the trails must be cleaned as if nothing had happened.<\/strong>
\nIf you want to organize a quality race, the commitment is year-round: because an event needs to be nurtured and nourished, especially in terms of communication and sponsorship.<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> There, you touched on one of the key points. Large events in the industry can rely on sponsors to cover many costs-what is the biggest difficulty for an event as small as FTF?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>Great event, great sponsor. Small event, small sponsor. Unfortunately, it is a sad truth, and the difficulties are enormous-I won’t hide from you that sometimes we have personally contributed so that the athletes don’t lack anything.<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> For what it’s worth I can confirm that in the editions I participated in, nothing was ever lacking: before, during and after the race I always felt cared for and looked after. I am very fascinated by the operation of route tracing: how does it come about? How much did you already know and how much was born later?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>The 54k loop course was born out of my personal knowledge of the area, which, bringing together all the highest peaks of the Nure Valley, lent itself well to a trail course. It goes without saying that I derived the two minor races partially from the same course.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> If you could have something that is not yet in the FTF, what would you want? Is there a particular goal you would like to achieve?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>My greatest wish is for TVGT101 to have the visibility it deserves in the national trail calendar in the future. I know, the Apennines do not reach the altitudes of the Alps, but the landscapes are still challenging and magnificent at the same time.<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> What is the most fun part of organizing and running the race? What about the most strenuous one?<\/p>\n

GO <\/strong>There is almost nothing fun about it: everything is effort, stress, commitment and sacrifice. But seeing the athletes smiling and satisfied with what they experienced gives us great satisfaction, repays us for every effort, and pushes us to do better and better!<\/p>\n

SL<\/strong> Pizza or carbonara?<\/p>\n

GO Pisarei <\/strong>e fas\u00f2, like the ones our volunteers start preparing by hand two months before the race, to offer athletes and companions an exclusive and local pasta party.<\/p>\n

A new beginning<\/h3>\n

In short – as I suspected – such a project requires tears and blood. However, this year, also accomplice to the cancellation of more emblazoned races, many top runners such as Alex Baldaccini or Stefano Rinaldi showed up at the starting line of the FTF and so many athletes discovered this race that the organization had to close registration early for the first time due to the high number of requests.<\/p>\n

It’s great to see the efforts of those who put a lot of passion and a huge heart into it paid off in this way.See you next year at FTF!<\/p>\n
