An experience that made him touch closely on the dramas of a continent struggling to get back on its feet, in the setting of the most serious epidemic in a hundred years. Here in Kenya most of the household appliances we are used to in the West do not exist, or if they exist ordinary people do not use them. Six days ago, as I entered the camp for the first time, I had noticed a flock of clothes lying on the hedges to dry. It really took me very little to realize that the kids here do their laundry by hand. Since I didn’t come here to revolutionize their habits, but rather to follow them, on the eighth day I show up with my sack full of dirty clothes in the grassy area behind the tool shack, where there is a faucet and plastic tubs. I had actually planned to wash my clothes three days before but Martin, my roommate, had thought of it for me after he saw me collapse on the way back from a fifteen-mile morning outing. Honestly, even at sea level, at six in the morning, I would have had a hard time running that distance, but with the altitude in between it had been tragic. So when I woke up three hours later, my laundry bag was gone. I had found it empty and my clothes all laid out to dry. Martin, seeing me knocked out, had thought nothing of it and washed me down to the last sock. Today, however, it is my turn so I reached the “laundry” area equipped with a basin and a piece of soap. The last time I had washed a basket of dirty stuff I think it had been a year ago, and the result had been a broken back, a mountain of wasted water, and clothes still stained. I look for a place to sit and start, Martin is next to me but Felix is there too. This boy was born with two special gifts. The first is the legs of course, the other is the smile that never loses. I knew Kenyans were not prone to anger, but this one is always in a good mood.<\/p>\n

– So you’re from Italy-he asks me as I try to straighten a sock.<\/p>\n

– Yes, have you ever raced there? –<\/p>\n

– No, I ran in France –<\/p>\n

– Oh yeah? Where? –<\/p>\n

– Lens – he answers me dryly.<\/p>\n

– Did you win it? – I ask.<\/p>\n

– No –<\/p>\n

– Let me guess- a Kenyan won it? – I ask jokingly.<\/p>\n

– Yes, yes, how do you know?<\/p>\n

– I was being ironic – I reply. – Ah okay, because in fact a Kenyan won –<\/p>\n

– The point is that a Kenyan always wins – I point out. – Not always – Martin interjects, intent on dipping a shoe into a bucket full of soap and water.<\/p>\n

– Sometimes Ethiopians win – he points out. In Europe we are quite clear why they are the strongest, but I have always wondered if they have any idea.<\/p>\n

– And why do you think either you or the Ethiopians always win?- Felix gets up and takes a seat on my stool. It is so wobbly that we almost end up in the ditch behind us but he doesn’t even notice.<\/p>\n

– You see Steven, we have the altitude and the dirt –<\/p>\n

– Agreed, but we have those in Europe as well –<\/p>\n

– Ah well, you see Steven, of course, then we have the real secret-. –<\/p>\n

– Yes, but what is it? –<\/p>\n

Felix begins to count with his hand.<\/p>\n

– Altitude, first –<\/p>\n

– Okay, altitude first – I repeat.<\/p>\n

– Second, the dirt roads –<\/p>\n

– And so far, there is no doubt about it. Dirt – I repeat again.<\/p>\n

– And third. – He shows me the three with his fingers.<\/p>\n

– The ugali! – and bursts into thunderous laughter with Martin.<\/p>\n

It’s been ten minutes, I’ve washed about half the laundry, and my back is in pieces. I cast an eye over to Martin; he has already accumulated a mountain of clean T-shirts that look like new in the bucket. But how does he do it, I think as I straighten my back.<\/p>\n

– Martin listen, but wouldn’t it be better to buy…I don’t know…a washing machine?- I venture, spying on his reaction. – Washing machine? – he repeats quietly. – Eh, yes. A washing machine – no. It takes up space – he sentences by throwing the dirty water from the basin into the lawn below us. – Okay Martin, never mind – I agree resignedly. The problem with running every day in the morning and afternoon is that you accumulate a mountain of dirty stuff to wash. If I don’t get the hang of it within three or four washes I’ll have to ask the physical therapist to treat my back instead of my legs. I get back underneath with my compression socks full of mud as the lawn has turned into a kind of bog. Felix has been staring at me for a while with a smile on his face. I think he’s about to fire a big one. – Steven what religion are you? – he asks me three seconds later. – None. I’m agnostic. -Agnostic? – he repeats. This word he must never have heard in his life.<\/p>\n

– I don’t believe in God-I try to explain, but the way I said it must have taken it as blasphemy.<\/p>\n

– How do you not believe in God? And what do you believe in? – he asks me incredulously.<\/p>\n

– In nothing – I reply. But I am not convincing. Martin scratches his chin while exchanging a glance with his partner. Then he squares me off for a moment and asks if I don’t happen to go to church either.<\/p>\n

– No longer. I used to go there when I was a kid – I reply as I wring out my red Asics T-shirt.<\/p>\n

Right now I could get inside both of their heads and see what they are thinking. They must surely be wondering what the heck happened that was so traumatic to take such a lurch and turn me into a heretic.<\/p>\n

– I don’t believe in what I don’t see – I try to throw into the mix by anticipating their next question. But it’s a conversation I’ve been through many times before, and I know it’s a labyrinth with no exit. In such cases I always try to disengage like a pilot parachuting out of a burning plane. The two, however, are not dropping the bone; they want to see it through. I do not know whether their attempt to help me with the remaining laundry or to save my soul from damnation is more moving. Finally, after half an hour, we come to a compromise. I may continue to believe in science and tangible things like St. Thomas, but in return I will accompany them to church next Saturday. It seems like a good deal, and my clothes meanwhile are all washed and smelling good. If this is not a miracle what is it?<\/p>\n
