Period. You risk getting hurt-little or a lot-you risk dying.

Ah but my lady, do you know how many people are pulled under by a car in the city? Yes, I know, I live in Milan and if I don’t look around with twelve eyes, walking and biking, I risk my life every day. But that is not the point. Because here we are talking about a place that is inherently dangerous, by its very nature, regardless of the behavior of others.

By this I certainly do not mean that you should not (should not) go to the mountains, far from it. Rather, I’m saying that you have to go there with enormous respect and-this for me is the key word-awareness. Awareness of the places, awareness of what you are going to do-whether it is a walk, a run, a via ferrata or any other activity-awareness of what equipment, if any, is needed to do it.

A question of accessibility

I have never been and probably never will be against technological progress: I don’t regret the carriages, I love my iPhone, I don’t think we were better off 50 years ago.
What progress has done in so many areas is mainly to reduce (in some cases to zero) the real or metaphorical distances of access to something. I give a couple of trivial examples: building a road that did not exist before allows people (goods, culture, etc.) far away to meet each other more easily; the invention of the telegraph (telephone, radio, TV, etc.) made it possible to communicate instantaneously by virtually nullifying huge distances. It is hard to say that we were better off before, at least as far as I am concerned.

Returning to the subject of mountains, it seems clear that building a road makes it possible for anyone to reach, with great ease, a place that was previously accessible to a willing and particularly fit few. The argument is even more valid when we talk about ski lifts that allow people to reach peaks that are often inaccessible to most. And here we come to the point: the fact that something is accessible does not automatically mean that it is for everyone. The fact that a peak was previously attainable only by very experienced mountaineers or hikers meant that there was a kind of natural selection that ensured that only those who were able to make the journey, both in terms of physical exertion and technical difficulty, could reach it. Now that anyone can get to it by cable car, an issue of safety and-indeed-awareness arises; because those who ride the cable car then want to (rightly?) walk around or perhaps walk down, as if going down is then easier than going up. And I have seen too many families in flip-flops, strollers (I swear, I’m not kidding) and tank tops at 3,000 m on impassable and dangerous trails in freezing cold weather not to think that all of this-managed like this, indeed unmanaged-has something wrong upstream. Moreover, it is useless to condemn the poor cable car, which in itself is only a very useful tool; it would be like blaming the knife and not the murderer. My point – have I already said that? – is the awareness of what is being done, and alas, I am becoming increasingly aware of how inversely proportional it is to the growth in the number of people approaching the mountains. Restricting access? I don’t think that’s the solution. Educate, perhaps.

The generational clash

Anyone who frequented the mountains even thirty years ago knows very well how people used to go to the mountains thirty years ago: boot that the higher the better, crotch socks, flannel shirt, breeches and million-liter backpack. Without digressing into the purely aesthetic realm, I can say that it is an area where we have made great strides, starting with materials and technologies and ending with the mindset with which we approach hiking in all its variations. When I see a group of scouts in the middle of the mountains in their cotton shirts and terry socks I just want to ask them why?

Since practicing trail running, I have learned to move lighter and lighter, even during a simple walk, reducing the material to the bone however, without this meaning sacrificing safety: simply nowadays you can have warm, waterproof clothing that weighs a handful of grams and that you can often slip into your pocket. The other great truth I have discovered through this sport concerns footwear: the tall, heavy, structured boot is not always and everywhere the best choice, quite the contrary. The above awareness is also (especially?) about awareness toward oneself, toward one’s body and one’s abilities. The aforementioned boot certainly protects you more from scavenging and other similar injuries, but it takes away considerable freedom of movement and sensitivity to the terrain you are treading. And instead what our body does, if we give it the opportunity, is to learn and adapt. Clearly, the transition needs to be gradual, welcome the boot for first-time mountaineers, but today on 90% of my mountain outings I wear trail running shoes: low, very light and with a relatively thin sole. And what I would like to say to the CAI guide (it’s a stereotype: I have been a CAI member for years and I will never stop thanking them because in Italy if there are trails we owe it mostly to them) who when he meets me shakes his head and mutters unflattering words is that I am not doing this because I am stupid or unconscious: far from it. I do it because I have trained my foot, my legs and my balance. I do it because I am enormously aware of my limitations, and I could not be if I had continued to tackle every little path dressed as if to reach Annapurna. And when I run at breakneck speed (of course I imagine myself as Kilian Jornet but then when I look at the videos I remember more Giampiero Galeazzi) down a cliff I am doing it with a naturalness that comes from years of gradual training that has led me to be able to do it today.

The competitions

Here I depart somewhat from the outdoor theme more generic to focus more on trail running, whose races if you will represent some of the riskiest moments: while it is true that there is a greater chance of assistance in case of injury than in a similar outing with friends, it is in fact equally true that at that juncture we try to exceed our limits by amending some of the safety in favor of performance. In addition, we talk about activities carried out in semi or total self-reliance, as appropriate.

Specifically-given the topic we are covering-there are two issues that often affect a race: the number of ITRA(International Trail Running Association) points required to participate and the mandatory equipment. These are both safety issues, although on ITRA points (to which, moreover, UTMB points have recently been added, but we’ll talk about that another time) we could discuss them at length, but I assure you: not today.
Simplifying as much as possible, it can be said that ITRA points define the difficulty of a race. To do a 3-point race you must have completed at least one 2-point race in the months prior (usually 18, but it depends) to registration, and so on up: to do a 4-point race you must have taken 3, etc. Disclaimer for the benefit of the more experienced, I am simplifying, I know it is not exactly so, but there is no point in going into technicalities here. Thus-aside from evidently thinning the ranks of potential participants-avoiding the possibility that someone might show up at the starting line of a 120-kilometer, 6,000-meter elevation gain race without any knowledge of what he or she is doing.
Similarly, the mandatory equipment (waterproof jacket of a certain type, minimum reserve of water and food, emergency tarp, etc.) is defined by the organizers so that none of the competitors are without something necessary to face that specific competition. It is understood that the material increases or changes depending on the difficulty of the race course, its length and the prevailing weather conditions.

It must be said, however, that this compulsory equipment thing mainly concerns European competitions-often for insurance reasons-and this acts as a springboard for the other bell to be heard in this regard as well: another approach, wilder but no stupider. We’re in the mountains, the mountains are dangerous, I’m giving you all the information you need about the race-weather, elevation gain, length, difficulty, map, roadbook, photos, videos, refreshments, whatever you want-you’re an adult and what preparation or equipment you show up at the start is kind of your business.

Here. Of course, I fully understand that those organizing a race would not be happy to have hundreds of retirements, injuries or-yes, it is to be counted-deaths. And when it goes wrong regularly the organizers get fleeced for not thinking through all the possible and unlikely scenarios. Therefore, every effort is made to allow everyone to compete in the optimal conditions. But with my heart, I cannot help but wonder why it is necessary to take on the ignorance or stupidity of others. Also because I guarantee you that the material Kilian needs to make a competition is one-tenth of what I need (for now, of course). And he knows it well. And I know it well.

Awareness.

[Cover photo by lucas Favre on Unsplash].

I beginat the end, with a provocation that is so only up to a point: the mountain is dangerous.
