Also thanks to a coach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap3\">Yes<\/span>, I know it&#8217;s a bit funny. Usually, when you decide to prepare for a race, the first thing you do is to register, and I haven&#8217;t done that yet, although, of course, that race is my goal and its date is firmly fixed in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>There is one thing that will sound even more bizarre: to prepare for this marathon that does not yet exist on paper, for the first time in my life as a runner, I decided to rely on a coach.<\/p>\n<p>And now I&#8217;m going to say the craziest sentence of the century: if the marathon that I&#8217;m preparing quite seriously is cancelled for any reason, I won&#8217;t take it so hard. I&#8217;m not saying this to impress, I really mean it.<\/p>\n<p>Not being a madwoman, of course, there are reasons for each of the absurdities, or alleged absurdities, that I have just written and just as many reasons why I feel I agree with them.<\/p>\n<p>On March 8, 2020, I was supposed to be in Japan, in Nagoya, running a marathon that I had prepared for and especially dreamed of so much. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but it&#8217;s only been two years-the longest two years ever, the ones that changed all of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>That day, instead of being in Japan, I made my last run knowing that the next day I would have to lock myself in the house, unaware that this social confinement would last two months. Two months without running, during which, after an initial moment of withdrawal, I learned to live without running.<\/p>\n<p>Running is my dearest friend but I, until that day, of friends, colleagues, acquaintances, &#8230;, I saw many, every day. Then nothing more. Just the loneliness and the inability to have human contact except through a cell phone or PC.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of months later, after the health emergency had passed, or at least it was thought to have, it was reported that it was possible to go out again and, therefore, also to run. In fact, you could even run without a facemask. What wonderful news.<\/p>\n<p>I found myself on my own, looking for off-the-beaten-path routes to avoid people walking on bike paths, in parks, everywhere, and the chance to be infected for some outdoor sport. So, here I am very slow and fatigued running through the ugliest streets of Milan.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, at that moment, the happiness of being able to see the sun again was so great, and the hope that the situation was almost resolved so comforting, that the mood was through the roof.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, however, it only took a short time to realize that my way of experiencing running had changed, and two years later, I can also argue that it has not yet returned to what it was before the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Sundays always, but really always, meant running in company: tapas, races, trips, collective training. Running has always been a good excuse to take a trip, or just move from Milan to run in the green at least one day a week, to be with friends, to run a race and to be out to lunch with friends. I had a full schedule for months and the only doubt was, &#8220;What if I ever get injured, then what do I do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Between highs and lows, we are still in a very delicate moment and unfortunately tapas are very difficult to organize, some races are cancelled, even on short notice, large training groups are a bit intimidating, going out for lunch after a race without a chance to take a shower is possible, but not exactly ideal, especially for those around us.<\/p>\n<p>So, in summary, you can run, but <strong>the social aspect of running has radically changed<\/strong>, in fact, it has been very limited.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, for the past few months, I have always waited until the days just before registration closes to register for a race: if a few euros difference for a bib number doesn&#8217;t change my life much, having registrations for all of 2023, in case of race cancellations, could be a problem since I don&#8217;t yet know what programs I will want to have.<\/p>\n<p>Having goals, though, helps me get out and run. It&#8217;s not that I don&#8217;t feel like running: if I had enough time and energy, I would go out for a run every day as well, but during these still-winter days, how many excuses can one find to stay peacefully at home in the warmth?<\/p>\n<p>It is not only the weather that is the enemy of the moment: the days spent in front of the PC, perhaps at home since it is safer than a shared office, the conversations that always seem to lead to the topic of the moment, the Covid, the desire to return to doing some activities in presence and the conflicting thought of self-protection since it would be impossible for me to be locked in the house for days for the work I do, the desire to do many things, such as parties, trips, and more, but the idea that I would not experience them as peacefully as I used to, have really drained me. Flattened. Stew.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I have to kind of fight with myself to force myself to do &#8220;normal&#8221; things.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s where the coach comes in: he has become my main incentive to go out and do a workout, sometimes even a heavy one, on those days when I really wouldn&#8217;t feel like it. Besides that, it is making me appreciate a path so much, regardless of the final destination.<\/p>\n<p>So, on balance, preparing for my maybe-marathon is a great strategy to psychologically come out of a particularly difficult time: it&#8217;s taking me away from the PC that has become my den, it&#8217;s forcing me to get out of the house and run on winter days, and it&#8217;s teaching me that preparation is also a wonderful experience.<\/p>\n<p>As always, in life, even from bad times we can draw some lessons and in difficulties the strength to find solutions to
