Consuming appropriate foods, maintaining hydration, and considering digestion time are crucial for improved performance and post-workout recovery.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6>There is no universal rule, but the size of the meal affects the waiting time. For example, large meals require 3-4 hours of waiting, while light meals may take as little as 30 minutes. Experimenting is essential, listening to one&#8217;s body.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap3\">T<\/span>he myth of the time to elapse between when you have eaten and bathing in the sea has long since been dismantled in its scientific foundation, but it cannot be denied that it has left something inside all of us. One form it has taken is that of waiting time between meals and workouts. While it is clear to anyone that it is not a good idea to go for a run as soon as a wedding banquet is over, it is normal to wonder how much time to let pass between a normal meal and the next run. The answer is not unambiguous, and here we attempt to provide clarity.<\/p>\n<h3>What is normally overlooked<\/h3>\n<p>The benefit of waiting between the time we eat and when we exercise and especially the effect that this waiting period can have are not two concepts that are highly valued, let&#8217;s face it. The importance of what we eat as a function of workouts is also often overlooked, so it is no wonder that the function of waiting time is an elusive concept to most.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with one consideration: time recommendations vary depending on your workout goals, meal size, foods consumed, individual age, and body type, and there is agreement among experts that waiting for at least a certain amount of time can not only improve the quality of your workout, but also prevent some problems that are not immediately explicit.<\/p>\n<h3>What you eat affects your training<\/h3>\n<p>The correlation between nutrition and training, in short, is not always crystal clear. In short, there is a difference between eating a lasagna or a salad, between taking in only fiber or also protein and carbohydrates. There is also a difference between drinking the right amount of fluids and not doing so. All these different ways of feeding and hydrating reflect on the quality of your workout and even post-workout.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming appropriate foods and drinking plenty of water prevents dehydration, maintains blood glucose levels, provides energy and can also improve post-workout recovery. Also, as sports dietitian for the Kansas City Chiefs Leslie Bonci explains, &#8220;If you don&#8217;t eat before exercise, your body will use some fatty acids as an energy source, but it will also break down muscle, and that&#8217;s not good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The time between meals and training<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk a little bit about timing. Consuming a meal too close to a workout can have unpleasant consequences: most foods take hours to digest, and digesting during a physical effort may not be the best time. For example, you may have abdominal pain or bloating after consuming certain foods such as broccoli, beans, cabbage or carbonated drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Is it therefore better to wait after eating? Yes, the answer is unambiguous. It is for two reasons: because it does not burden the physique with a double effort (digestion+workout) and it does not slow down digestion, due to the workout distracting the blood from flushing the stomach and intestines to carry oxygen to the muscles. In the end, it&#8217;s simple: your body can commit blood either to muscle or to digest, and if it has to do both, it can only compromise both the quality of your workout and the effectiveness of your digestion.<\/p>\n<p>How long to wait in short? Sorry but in this case there is no single answer. Or rather: it depends. Bonci suggests relating meal size to time, with the following results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Large meal: 3-4 hour wait.<\/li>\n<li>Lighter meal (sandwich, smoothie, snack): 1-2 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Light meal (fruit, one cereal bar): 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>In conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>There is no definite rule but only directions. There are people who tolerate workouts close to meals well and others who tolerate those on an empty stomach, and also the other way around. As in many cases in life, the advice is: experiment. Try to have a full meal and exercise after 2 hours. Repeat this but train after 4 hours and note the differences or at least notice them.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, as always, it&#8217;s all about listening to your body.
