No, not in a figurative \u201cI feel light as an astronaut\u201d way. We mean actually running\u2014vertically\u2014mile after mile, straight out of Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It sounds absurd, but someone did the math to figure out how long it would really take. Spoiler: it wouldn\u2019t be an easy jog.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-would-it-take-to-run-to-space\" class=\"p1\">How long would it take to \u201crun\u201d to space?<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">Let\u2019s assume you\u2019re an average runner maintaining a pace of 10 km\/h and that a magical vertical track exists\u2014ignoring minor inconveniences like gravity and lack of oxygen. Try knocking\u2014they might offer you a cup of tea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>3,500 hours (146 days) in<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> \u2013 You\u2019ve made it to geostationary satellites at 35,000 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>4 \u00bd years in<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> \u2013 With an endless supply of energy gels, you might finally reach the Moon.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">Of course, all of this ignores minor details like human endurance, oxygen deprivation, and, well, the fact that gravity wouldn\u2019t exactly let you \u201crun\u201d upwards.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"redefining-the-ultramarathon\" class=\"p1\">Redefining the ultramarathon<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\">At this point, it\u2019s impossible not to compare this wild journey to the toughest ultramarathons on Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Think <a href=\"https:\/\/runlovers.it\/en\/2022\/the-badwater-135-the-hottest-race-in-the-world\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Badwater 135<\/b><\/span><\/a>, a brutal 217 km race through Death Valley\u2019s scorching heat. Now imagine that, but uphill. Forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Or consider the infamous <span class=\"s1\"><b>Barkley Marathons<\/b><\/span>, a 100-mile trek through an unforgiving wilderness, with no course markings and an almost 99% dropout rate. Tough? Sure. But at least you can breathe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Running to space, in short, would be the ultimate ultramarathon\u2014no aid stations, no checkpoints, no oxygen, and only one direction: up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Running lessons from an impossible journey<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">No one is ever going to run to space (unless someone invents an infinitely long zero-gravity treadmill). But this wild thought experiment still offers valuable lessons about running:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p5\"><b>Endurance is everything<br \/>\n<\/b>The human body is capable of mind-blowing feats when trained properly. Running for 40 hours straight isn\u2019t for everyone, but improving endurance is key to conquering any challenge\u2014whether it\u2019s a half marathon or an ultra.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><b>Limits exist to be pushed<br \/>\n<\/b>If someone told you a person could run six days straight without sleep, would you believe it? It\u2019s happened. Maybe your goal is running 5K without stopping or finishing your first marathon. The important thing is to start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">So, while you\u2019ll probably never run all the way to the International Space Station, the next time you lace up and head out, remember: every step is a little further than yesterday.
