Maybe you think that about a marathoner who runs a 3:30 mile, a musician who makes magic with a guitar, or a friend who picks up a new language in a month. The go-to explanation? <em data-start=\"600\" data-end=\"621\">&#8220;It\u2019s just talent.&#8221;<\/em> And underneath that? <em data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"667\">&#8220;Talent I don\u2019t have.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"talent-is-overrated\" data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"696\">Talent is overrated<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"957\">Take polyglots, for example. I once heard a bunch of them being interviewed, and they all said the same thing: <em data-start=\"809\" data-end=\"853\">&#8220;We\u2019re not special\u2014we just have a method.&#8221;<\/em> And it was true. They weren\u2019t geniuses; they simply used a structured approach to learning languages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"1096\">But this isn\u2019t about languages\u2014it\u2019s about talent vs. method, and how practice and perseverance matter infinitely more than raw ability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1401\">If talent alone decided success, the world would be full of champions who never train, writers who never read, and chefs who never experiment but somehow whip up masterpieces. Instead, reality is different: talent may be a head start, but without dedication and discipline, it\u2019s just wasted potential.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1582\">Think of Usain Bolt. Sure, he has incredible genetics, but without years of training, strict nutrition, and a winning mindset, he\u2019d just be another <em data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1561\">fast guy<\/em>\u2014not the <em data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"1579\">fastest<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-talent-alibi\" data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1608\">The &#8220;talent&#8221; alibi<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1850\">Calling someone talented is often an excuse. It\u2019s comforting to believe that success is purely innate\u2014because if that were true, then there\u2019s no point in trying if you weren\u2019t <em data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1800\">born with it<\/em>. But as U.S. basketball coach Tim Notke put it:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1911\"><em data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1909\">&#8220;Hard work beats talent when talent doesn\u2019t work hard.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"2030\">Take two athletes: one naturally gifted but lazy, the other average but relentless. The second one wins every time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2426\">And let\u2019s talk about <em data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2060\">Rocky<\/em>. He\u2019s not the strongest. He\u2019s not the most technical. But he\u2019s the one who trains the hardest. And in the end, he gets where no one thought he could. Sure, he\u2019s fictional, but there are countless real-life athletes who built extraordinary careers with <em data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2319\">zero<\/em> special advantages\u2014just as there are naturally gifted ones who faded because they never put in the work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2470\">Because the <em data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2446\">real<\/em> talent? Perseverance.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-only-talent-that-matters-consistency\" data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2519\">The only talent that matters: consistency<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2638\">If you want to improve at running\u2014or anything else\u2014don\u2019t ask, <em data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2601\">&#8220;Am I talented?&#8221;<\/em> Ask, <em data-start=\"2607\" data-end=\"2636\">&#8220;Am I putting in the work?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2699\">Champions aren\u2019t made by DNA. They\u2019re made by discipline.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2701\" data-end=\"2924\">At first, it\u2019s frustrating. You just started running, and others seem light-years ahead. But if you keep at it, if you show up on rainy days and push through when your legs are screaming, that\u2019s what makes the difference.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"3070\">The best athletes aren\u2019t just winners\u2014they\u2019re examples. Their success isn\u2019t a <em data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3017\">destination<\/em>; it\u2019s a <em data-start=\"3026\" data-end=\"3035\">roadmap<\/em> for anyone willing to follow it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3323\">Take Jannik Sinner. You\u2019ll probably never play tennis like him, but you can learn from how he handles pressure. He never loses his temper\u2014not because he\u2019s shy, but because he sees it as wasted energy. That\u2019s something anyone can apply, in any field.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"give-yourself-time\" data-start=\"3325\" data-end=\"3349\">Give yourself time<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3351\" data-end=\"3618\">Anyone who has run a marathon knows the real battle isn\u2019t in the legs\u2014it\u2019s in the mind. It\u2019s your brain that tells you to stop, to make excuses, to believe you\u2019re not \u201ccut out\u201d for this. But the truth? No one <em data-start=\"3560\" data-end=\"3564\">is<\/em>\u2014until they put in the work to <em data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3603\">become<\/em> that person.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3620\" data-end=\"3866\">And here\u2019s the best part: not having \u201cnatural talent\u201d is actually good news. It means nothing is stopping you from trying. More importantly, it means you\u2019re not at a disadvantage compared to the <em data-start=\"3815\" data-end=\"3825\">talented<\/em> people who never develop their skills.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3868\" data-end=\"3948\">Talent isn\u2019t handed out equally\u2014but willpower is. Everyone has it. Few use it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3950\" data-end=\"4028\">So the real question isn\u2019t whether you <em data-start=\"3989\" data-end=\"3994\">can<\/em> do it.
