After all, you\u2019ve seen it happen. Not long ago, you weren\u2019t running at all. Then, a few miles felt like an ordeal. Now, 5, 8, even 10 miles are within reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maybe you\u2019ve unlocked a new level. Maybe your limit is much farther than you thought. It\u2019s often said that we overestimate what we can do in the short term and underestimate what we can achieve in the long run. The same applies to your body: you might not realize what it\u2019s truly capable of. But, of course, there <i>is<\/i> a limit.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">The limit<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">It exists\u2014but it\u2019s much farther than most of us assume. How far, exactly? If you think humans were built for a sedentary life, science and evolutionary history say otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We are biologically wired for endurance running, thanks to several key adaptations<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Unlike most animals that cool off by panting, we sweat, allowing us to regulate body temperature more efficiently<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Our Achilles tendon stores energy with each step, reducing energy costs<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">We have a remarkable aerobic capacity, meaning our cardiovascular system is designed for prolonged exertion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ever felt like you could run forever once you got past the initial fatigue? That\u2019s why. And also, let\u2019s be honest, there\u2019s a certain thrill in breaking your personal limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Joking aside, the body finds its rhythm, oxygen is used more efficiently, and you enter a kind of <i>marathon mode.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">So, what is the human limit?<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">It depends. If we\u2019re talking extreme running, some athletes have gone for days without stopping. One of the most mind-blowing examples is Dean Karnazes, an ultramarathoner who ran 350 miles (about 560 km) in 80 hours\u2014without sleep. He\u2019s not alone. Italian runner Andrea Marcato has won multiple editions of the <span class=\"s1\"><b>Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race<\/b><\/span>, the longest certified race in the world, covering <span class=\"s1\"><b>4,989 km (3,100 miles)<\/b><\/span>. In 2024, he completed it in <span class=\"s1\"><b>43 days, 3 hours, 4 minutes, and 6 seconds.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even without pushing to such extremes, countless runners regularly complete ultramarathons of <span class=\"s1\"><b>100 km, 160 km, or more<\/b><\/span>\u2014casually calling them \u201cjust\u201d ultras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Of course, not everyone is a Karnazes or a Marcato. But here\u2019s the key takeaway: with the right training, nutrition, hydration, and mental strategy, the average person could likely run at least <span class=\"s1\"><b>50 km non-stop<\/b><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">What really limits you?<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">You might think it\u2019s your legs giving out first, but often the real barriers are mental and physiological:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Glycogen depletion:<\/b><\/span> Your muscle sugar reserves run low, forcing your body to burn fat, a slower and less efficient energy source.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>Dehydration:<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> Losing too much fluid reduces your blood\u2019s ability to carry oxygen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b>The brain\u2019s built-in safety mode:<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> Fatigue often kicks in <\/span><i style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">before<\/i><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> you\u2019re truly exhausted\u2014it\u2019s your brain\u2019s way of keeping you from pushing too far.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ultramarathoners manage these obstacles through careful pacing, fueling on the go, and, most importantly, <span class=\"s1\"><b>mental resilience.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">So\u2026 how far can you run?<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you\u2019re comfortable with 10 km, the right strategy could take you to 20 or 30 km. If you\u2019ve run a half marathon, a marathon is within reach with solid preparation. And if you\u2019ve already tackled a marathon\u2014well, you probably know by now that endurance is a moving target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Because the thing about limits?
