From movement to reading to meditation: it all comes down to conscious choices.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Social media shows us \u201cperfect\u201d lives and makes us feel inadequate. But what you see is just a part of reality. And often, not even the true part.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t have to stop scrolling altogether &#8211; just start choosing. There are simple alternatives that enrich instead of depleting. Ten minutes at a time.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap dropcap3\">P<\/span>ersonal growth depends on two things: <strong>intention<\/strong> and <strong>available time<\/strong>. And it\u2019s often that second one we overlook, waste, or use poorly. In fact, I\u2019d like to focus on one specific idea: <strong>we scroll away our time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We scroll. We scroll while standing in line, waiting for coffee, or right before bed. We scroll out of habit, to fill empty moments, to distract ourselves.<br \/>\nAnd there\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with that gesture. It\u2019s just that &#8211; more often than not &#8211; we don\u2019t even realize we\u2019re doing it. And by the end of the day, what we thought would take \u201cjust two minutes\u201d has turned into hours.<\/p>\n<p>Social media is built for this: to hold our attention. And it works brilliantly.<br \/>\nJust think: the average user scrolls the equivalent height of Big Ben &#8211; 96 meters &#8211; every single day.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u201cpolished\u201d life<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s another aspect of compulsive scrolling that\u2019s probably one of the most insidious: illusion. Let\u2019s start with this: most of what we see on social media is \u201centertainment.\u201d It\u2019s never the whole story. It\u2019s a polished version, optimized for storytelling &#8211; sometimes entirely fabricated.<br \/>\nAnd that\u2019s especially true when it comes to sports: perfect bodies, amazing results, peak performance all the time. You rarely see people tired, sweaty, struggling. Everyone\u2019s smiling, as if it were all so easy &#8211; but we know it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s hard not to be influenced. You train three times a week, but it feels like it\u2019s not enough. You run, but not as fast as others. You\u2019re not organized enough.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ve all felt that, in one way or another. This constant exposure to seemingly flawless lives distances us from reality, makes us feel inadequate, and &#8211; ironically &#8211; more alone.<\/p>\n<p>Mindless scrolling robs us of something much more valuable: <strong>presence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The more we\u2019re absorbed by screens, the less we\u2019re in the moment. The less we hear our bodies, our emotions, the people around us. And often we don\u2019t realize that it\u2019s in those stolen moments that we could be doing something that actually makes us feel good.<\/p>\n<p>Like moving. Walking. Running. Reading. Thinking.<\/p>\n<h3>Is there an alternative?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes &#8211; and it\u2019s not extreme. I\u2019m not saying \u201cturn everything off\u201d (though the idea of hiding in a cabin does sound tempting sometimes). Social media has its good sides too: it connects us, inspires us, informs us. I\u2019m just saying: we need to <strong>choose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because the key is to use it consciously. And more importantly, to choose intentionally how we spend our time.<\/p>\n<p>So I started asking myself: what else could I do with those lost minutes? There\u2019s no single answer. But some simple, practical alternatives have given me back much more than I expected.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/flipboard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flipboard<\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>If you enjoy staying informed and up to date, <a href=\"https:\/\/flipboard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flipboard<\/a> is a smart platform that suggests real articles based on the topics you choose.<br \/>\nYes, it\u2019s still scrolling &#8211; but guided by curiosity, not by the need to fill a void.<br \/>\nYou can access it from the app or the website. It\u2019s free, and it lets you dive deeper into many topics.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>2. Kindle, real books (or anything that piques your interest)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Opening a book &#8211; even just for ten minutes &#8211; is a way to slow down and focus.<br \/>\nYou don\u2019t need to read something heavy: a short story collection, a long-form article, a biography. The difference is that when you\u2019re done reading, you feel full &#8211; not empty.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>3. Podcasts, music, audiobooks<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>If you want to stay in passive mode, at least listen to something that enriches or supports you. A podcast (maybe while walking), a new album, an audiobook.<br \/>\nIn those minutes, you can breathe, think, move. And it\u2019s a completely different feeling.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>4. Physical activity, even something light<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>When I was a kid and I was bored, my grandmother used to say: \u201cIf you don\u2019t know what to do, go out for a run.\u201d It\u2019s the classic advice we\u2019ve all heard: <strong>move<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEven just 15 minutes of walking. Or a light jog. When you say \u201cI don\u2019t have time,\u201d it\u2019s often just that you\u2019ve already filled it with something that gives you nothing back.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you could stretch, do some core exercises or strength work.<br \/>\nIn short, <em>sweating instead of scrolling<\/em> isn\u2019t a bad idea, right?<\/p>\n<h5><strong>5. Meditation or mindfulness apps<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Meditation has proven benefits for mental health, awareness, and concentration.<br \/>\nApps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Headspace<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calm.com\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calm<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/balanceapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Balance<\/a> (or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/it\/apple-fitness-plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Fitness+<\/a>) offer guided sessions that help reduce stress and increase mindfulness. Even just ten minutes can make a real difference in your quality of life.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>6. Writing, thinking, listening to yourself<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It may seem trivial, but writing down how you\u2019re feeling &#8211; or even just sitting still and breathing for five minutes &#8211; can do wonders. More than you\u2019d imagine.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a way to reconnect, to say \u201cI\u2019m here,\u201d to pause the noise and reclaim your mental space.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>This isn\u2019t a crusade &#8211; it\u2019s an opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be a purist. Scrolling every now and then isn\u2019t a crime.<br \/>\nBut doing it all the time, without thinking, becomes an <strong>invisible prison<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you choose a more conscious alternative just once a day, you\u2019re already changing something. You\u2019re choosing to be present. To live better.
