It\u2019s no surprise they spark outrage: in purely material terms, it\u2019s true\u2014the production cost of many high-priced products is much lower. But, as is often the case, the reality is a bit more complex. It\u2019s part of a much bigger story that we\u2019d like to explore\u2014not to take sides, but to give you more context so you can better understand how things really work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To get the full picture, we have to take a step back. And then a few steps forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But let\u2019s start from the beginning: a shoe doesn\u2019t begin its life on the production line. It starts long before that.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">It\u2019s not just a shoe\u2014it\u2019s a project<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The story begins well before your next pair of running shoes ends up on a shelf or a website, long before it\u2019s packed in a box, shipped, cleared through customs, and displayed. A shoe is born in a brand\u2019s labs, in their design centers, among product and material specialists and at the desks of designers. That\u2019s where ideas are tested, designs are drafted, prototypes are made. Mistakes are made. And tried again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is the realm of R&amp;D, and in the world of sportswear, it\u2019s not a luxury\u2014it\u2019s the heart of everything. Want to run faster? You need lighter, more responsive foam. Let\u2019s figure out how to make it. Need to shave off weight from the shoe? Try more breathable uppers\u2014maybe lighter ones too. Behind these ideas, tests, and failures lies a serious investment. Time, technology, patents. And money\u2014lots of money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And all of that feeds into the number you\u2019ll later see on the price tag.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">Cost, price, and value are not the same thing<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Allow us a quick detour\u2014one that\u2019s necessary to clarify some key concepts that help determine a product\u2019s final price. If you\u2019re already familiar with the difference between cost, price, and value, feel free to skip ahead. If not, hang with us. We\u2019ll keep it short.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Industrial cost<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is the amount it takes to physically produce something and includes materials, labor, and indirect costs. Importantly, it <i>doesn\u2019t<\/i> include overhead like marketing, facility rent, salaries, and so on.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Price<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">The retail price is what you see on the tag in stores or online. Since it includes things like marketing, transportation, taxes, and retailer margins, it\u2019s inevitably higher than the production cost.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Value<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Value is a more abstract concept\u2014you don\u2019t calculate it, you feel it. And sometimes, it\u2019s worth more than anything else. Here\u2019s an example: a \u20ac300 pair of shoes may seem wildly expensive to someone earning \u20ac1,200 a month\u2014but cheap to someone making 10 or 100 times that. It\u2019s all relative, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Still, value is hard to define because it varies from person to person and situation to situation. So for simplicity, we\u2019ll focus on two kinds: economic value and perceived value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Economic value is what you\u2019re willing to pay to get something. That\u2019s why it doesn\u2019t live <i>in<\/i> the product\u2014it lives in the eye of the beholder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s the same reason a Picasso is worth millions, even though it\u2019s just canvas and paint. Or why a Birkin bag can cost more than a motorcycle. Same story: you\u2019re not buying an object, you\u2019re buying how that object makes you feel. The story it tells\u2014and how it makes you feel part of that story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Perceived value is the worth you personally assign to a good or service. For instance, a rare Pok\u00e9mon card might be priceless to a collector\u2014but meaningless to you, if you\u2019re not into Pok\u00e9mon. Remember perceived value\u2014it\u2019s a central concept in marketing that we\u2019ll revisit later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Let\u2019s also add a third kind of value: environmental\/social value. This is the positive (or negative) impact a product has on society and the planet. It\u2019s not always easy\u2014or even possible\u2014to measure this in money, since it involves many overlapping, fuzzy areas. But keep it in mind anyway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, when you see that a \u20ac180 shoe costs \u20ac30 to make, you might think you\u2019re paying six times more than it\u2019s worth. But as we\u2019ve seen, you\u2019re paying for its economic value, its perceived value, and sometimes its environmental value. You\u2019re not just paying for a product\u2014you\u2019re paying for everything that made that product possible, that brought it to you, and made you want to run in it. You\u2019re paying for how it makes you feel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And don\u2019t forget: we\u2019re talking about non-essential goods here. Running shoes aren\u2019t food, housing, or water. You <i>can<\/i> live without them\u2014but you <i>can\u2019t<\/i> live without eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>In short:<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cost is what it takes to physically make something\u2014materials, labor, energy, a production facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Price is what you decide to sell it for (so you can make a profit, as we\u2019ll see).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Value is what the buyer <i>thinks<\/i> it\u2019s worth\u2014or the amount of wealth they\u2019re willing to give up to get it.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">From raw materials to your feet: every step adds to the story<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">So far, we\u2019ve seen that the story of our shoe begins long before it\u2019s made. And it continues well beyond that point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You need raw materials: EVA or PEBAX foams, carbon plates, technical mesh\u2014often sourced from specialized suppliers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You have to manufacture it\u2014typically in countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, or China, where labor costs are lower. But you still need machines, facilities, and quality control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then come shipping and customs\u2014international transport, insurance, import duties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There\u2019s logistics\u2014warehouses, distribution, sorting centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And finally: retail. Physical stores or online platforms, with their own fixed costs, staff, marketing, returns, after-sales support, customer service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each step costs money. And each step increases the product\u2019s perceived value.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">Enter the brand<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">So far, we\u2019ve talked about a generic \u201cShoe X\u201d: no brand, mid-to-high tech\u2014a kind of neutral case study. But now let\u2019s talk about the brand\u2014the invisible but powerful main character. When you buy a branded shoe, you\u2019re not just buying a shoe. You\u2019re buying an identity, a promise, a story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As marketing professor and author Scott Galloway says, \u201cA brand is a promise: of reliability and of value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When you buy a \u201cbranded\u201d product, you\u2019re essentially buying its name, its quality, its values\u2014and your place among the people who share and display those values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s brand value. Credibility only comes through carefully built relationships between brand and consumer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And yes, all of that ends up in the price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But here\u2019s a question: how much <i>less<\/i> would you be willing to pay for the same shoe\u2014without the logo?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">Luxury teaches us (without running)<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">To take this further, let\u2019s push the idea to its limits and look at the luxury world. Here, we\u2019re not talking about a product that costs six times its industrial cost\u2014we\u2019re talking ten, even twenty times. And that\u2019s not even factoring in how hard it is to actually get one (thanks in part to intentionally limited supply\u2014a tactic known as \u201cengineered scarcity\u201d). Take the Herm\u00e8s Birkin bag: retail price over \u20ac10,000; estimated production cost around \u20ac1,200. Too much?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Actually, that gap is filled with years of storytelling, desire, and exclusivity. No one buys a Birkin for the leather. They buy what it represents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And in our own way, we do the same thing with running shoes. Not to the same extreme\u2014but using the same logic.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">The end? Nope, just the beginning<b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">So what\u2019s the <i>real<\/i> cost of a running shoe? It\u2019s a puzzle. The production cost is just one piece. But there are many others\u2014often invisible, but essential. Understanding them is the first step toward being a more informed consumer\u2014and maybe even a more mindful runner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s why we\u2019re not wrapping up by telling you the exact cost of producing a shoe\u2014even if we\u2019ve dropped a few hints along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Instead, we want to leave you with this: figuring out that number is more complicated than it seems.
