You\u2019re not the only one who, ten minutes in, finds their brain sprinting faster than their legs, caught in a mental playlist looping \u201cDid I send that email?\u201d, \u201cWhy did they say that?\u201d, \u201cWhat if it rains tomorrow?\u201d or, on tougher days, \u201cDo I even exist?\u201d<br \/>\nWhy does it happen? Because running \u2014 in all its apparent simplicity \u2014 creates space. And when space opens up, the mind fills it.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s another way. You can run differently. Not to escape your thoughts, but to listen to them without getting stuck in them.<br \/>\nAnd maybe that\u2019s the whole point: it\u2019s not about <em>stopping<\/em> thinking \u2014 it\u2019s about thinking better. Or just less, if you prefer. Mostly, it\u2019s about not letting that little voice in your head start lifting weights that aren\u2019t yours.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-moving-mind\">A moving mind<\/h2>\n<p>Sure, running is a physical act. But it\u2019s also a kind of mental dance. When you run, your brain enters a state that resembles a light form of trance. It\u2019s the same principle as <em>flow<\/em> \u2014 that state where you&#8217;re so immersed in what you&#8217;re doing that you forget about yourself.<br \/>\nOnly, to get there, you\u2019ve got to cross a tricky mountain pass: the land of <strong><em>overthinking<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, you start running and your brain fires up with everything. It\u2019s your mind trying to stay in control, to \u201ctake over\u201d the body that&#8217;s suddenly acting on its own. It doesn\u2019t like silence, because silence is unpredictable. But that\u2019s also where the best stuff happens.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"five-senses-one-body-one-moment\">Five senses, one body, one moment<\/h2>\n<p>A trick (that\u2019s not really a trick) to stay present? Call on your senses. Look around: what colors do you see? What sounds are out there beyond your playlist or the podcast in your ears (which, by the way, you can turn off now and then)? What does the air smell like this morning?<\/p>\n<p>Then shift to your body. How\u2019s your foot hitting the ground? How\u2019s your breath? Can you feel the muscles in your shoulders, legs, back?<br \/>\nYou\u2019re <em>inside<\/em> the experience, not outside of it. Training that kind of awareness \u2014 without judgment \u2014 is the first step to not getting lost in your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>And your pace? That\u2019s your internal metronome. Whether it\u2019s slow, upbeat, or a kind of <em>adagio cantabile<\/em>, follow it like you\u2019d follow a song. If you&#8217;re lucky, it becomes like John Bonham\u2019s drums in Led Zeppelin: steady, brilliant, alive.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"breathe-your-way-out-of-the-thought-spiral\">Breathe your way out of the thought spiral<\/h2>\n<p>Breath is like your nervous system\u2019s remote control. You can use it to change the channel whenever your mind gets stuck on a loop. How? Try inhaling for three steps, exhaling for three. Or go with a 4-4 pattern (four steps to inhale, four to exhale).<br \/>\nThe formula doesn\u2019t matter as much as consistency. And every time you notice your thoughts drifting, just bring them back \u2014 to the breath, to your steps, to your body.<\/p>\n<p>Does it work? Yes. But not right away. Like anything that matters, it takes practice. But unlike endurance, it\u2019ll never leave you breathless. ;-)<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"moving-meditation-its-a-real-thing\">Moving meditation (it\u2019s a real thing)<\/h2>\n<p>Who said meditation has to be still and silent? Walking meditation has been around since the days of Zen monks \u2014 and now it\u2019s got its own Headspace playlist. Bringing it into your running means watching your thoughts without judging them, letting them float by like clouds while your body keeps moving.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to empty your mind (spoiler: that\u2019s super hard).<br \/>\nYou just need to notice what\u2019s in there without getting swept away.<br \/>\nThis is where running becomes a mental practice, too \u2014 not just a physical one. You\u2019re not just training your heart and lungs. You\u2019re training your attention.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dont-stop-thinking-choose-what-to-think\">Don\u2019t stop thinking: choose <em>what<\/em> to think<\/h2>\n<p>Maybe the question at the start was off. It\u2019s not about stopping your thoughts. It\u2019s about not being dragged around by them. About not finishing your run more exhausted in the head than in the legs.<\/p>\n<p>Running gives you a choice: do you want to keep ruminating, or do you want to listen? Do you want to get carried away by your thoughts or walk beside them in silence, like two old friends who no longer need to explain everything?<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t always nail it. Some days you\u2019ll run stuck in your thoughts. Other days you\u2019ll feel present, clear, quiet.
