Some shoes adapt to you. And then there are shoes that challenge you to keep up. The new New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5<\/a><\/strong> belongs to the latter category. Slip it on and it doesn\u2019t ask \u201cwhere are we going?\u201d\u2014it asks \u201chow hard are we going today?\u201d. And chances are that even if you swore you’d just take it easy, you\u2019ll end up pushing a bit more. Because that\u2019s how it\u2019s built. And maybe, that\u2019s how you are too.<\/p>\n

The fifth edition of the Rebel (a name that\u2019s never been random) feels like the natural evolution of an urban species that\u2019s learned to run fast and light without ever giving up on feeling good in its own skin. No need to choose between performance and comfort, or between design and function. It\u2019s all here. And it works.<\/p>\n

Rebel, but With a Method<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s be clear: the Rebel v5<\/a> isn\u2019t a shoe \u201cfor everyone,\u201d at least not in the watered-down sense. It\u2019s more a shoe \u201cfor everything\u201d: for midweek intervals, weekend long runs, and those easy runs that you don\u2019t actually want to run too easy. It\u2019s got more cushioning than the previous version (thanks to an extra 2.5 mm of FuelCell foam), which makes the ride smoother and\u2014if we dare say\u2014softer, without losing its snap.<\/p>\n

Grip, Propulsion, and a Certain Flair<\/h2>\n

Then there\u2019s a detail you only really notice when it *doesn\u2019t* work: the outsole. The tread has been reworked with added forefoot stiffness. The result? A more effective toe-off and a more propulsive feel. It\u2019s the kind of thing you may only pick up on subconsciously\u2014like when you reach the end of your run and realize you\u2019ve still got something left in the tank. Or that you got there earlier than expected.<\/p>\n

The upper is light and breathable\u2014not just for looks (although, let\u2019s face it, that counts too). FantomFit technology gives it a snug and stable fit, while the redesigned heel and integrated tongue reduce those annoying little movements that sometimes make you feel like you got dressed in the dark. The Rebel v5 fits like a glove. A very technical one. With a streetwise edge.<\/p>\n

Another thing that stands out about the new Rebel is how legit it feels both on the track and on the street. Literally.
