It’s not magic, or one of those instant fixes you see all over social media. It’s something more subtle. For many, running is a way to live with pain. Or, at the very least, to redefine its boundaries, to put it into perspective.

Running has this incredible ability: it guides you through pain instead of making you forget it. It’s like that old friend who doesn’t judge, who listens without interrupting, and ultimately, it just feels good to talk to them, even if they don’t say much back. Being heard is a huge deal, and running knows how to listen.

The Paradox of Endurance

Let’s kick things off with an apparent contradiction: How can an activity that often causes pain actually help reduce it? The answer is as straightforward as it is profound.

When you run, your body becomes a little chemical factory in motion. It releases endorphins, our natural pain relievers. These, along with the production of endocannabinoids, give you that pleasant “runner’s high”—that euphoric feeling you sometimes get after a great run. Endorphins work on your brain’s receptors, dialing down your pain perception. It’s like your body is getting a natural painkiller IV drip, only instead of a needle, you’ve got sweat.

It’s no coincidence that some studies have shown how regular runners tend to have a higher pain threshold. The same stimulus that a sedentary person might find annoying could feel much less bothersome for someone who’s been running for a while.

Moving Meditation

But endorphins don’t tell the whole story. There’s also a mental, almost meditative, side to running. When you run, it’s just you, the rhythm of your steps, and your breath. It’s a moment of moving meditation, a space where the present is the only thing that truly matters.

This focus on the here and now helps shift your attention away from the pain. It’s like you’re putting it in a corner, observing it from a distance, without letting it dominate you. It’s a lesson you learn mile after mile: the ability to live with discomfort, to accept it, and sometimes even to turn it into extra motivation.

Some research has indicated that running can have effects similar to therapy in managing mild depression and generalized anxiety. It’s not a complete fix, but it’s a valuable resource. An alternative way to express yourself.

The Body as a Journal

Running is also a way to keep tabs on yourself. Every outing is a page written with your feet, a collection of sensations, including pain. And in this sense, pain becomes an uncomfortable but necessary ally. It teaches you to listen to your body, to slow down, to know when to push and when to stop. It also helps you find motivation when, among a thousand things you feel you can’t handle, it’s one of the few you actually manage to complete. And “getting things done” is incredibly satisfying for the mind, like few other things.

Some people keep a running diary, some track everything on an app, others simply remember certain days by how their run went, not by what else happened. Every step becomes a daily exercise in mindfulness. Every now and then, you can look at the miles you’ve covered this month or last year: your story is there, among those numbers, and everything you’ve done for your body and mind.

Sleep and Control

Let’s not overlook two secondary but important aspects of running: sleep and a sense of control. A good run helps you sleep better, and quality sleep is crucial for managing pain. It’s not a magic bullet, but a regular running routine can make your nights much more restful.

In a world that often feels like it’s slipping through your fingers, running gives you back a little piece of that feeling of mastery. Every step, every mile, is a small victory. And every victory, no matter how tiny, builds confidence in your abilities and your belief that you can tackle challenges.

No Promises, Just an Opportunity

Running isn’t a cure-all; it won’t make you happy or invincible. It doesn’t eliminate pain, but it teaches you to live with it better. To find a rhythm. To give yourself a break. It’s a way to put pain in perspective: you shift it, you look at it from a different angle, you take away some of its power.

So, the next time you feel that annoying little tick of pain, that feeling of having a pebble in your soul’s shoe, try lacing up your running shoes and letting a little light filter through the cracks. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need to keep going, one step at a time.

Running can transform your relationship with pain.
