This summer, I ran less. Not because I was injured or feeling down. I wasn\u2019t even on vacation (and probably won\u2019t take one). I just didn\u2019t feel like running. And for the first time, I was okay with that.<\/p>\n
It may not sound like much\u2014but to me, it meant everything.<\/p>\n
Over the years, I\u2019ve learned\u2014or maybe I should say *forced myself*\u2014to be disciplined, consistent, always on. On the track, at work, in life. Like an inner metronome ticking nonstop: you must, you must, you must. And if you miss a beat, that voice inside shows up to tell you you failed. That you\u2019re not enough. That *this isn\u2019t how it\u2019s done*.<\/p>\n
Then came summer. And with it, that special kind of slowness that first irritates you, then makes you question things, and finally welcomes you in. Mornings that start slow, runs pushed to dawn or dusk to avoid melting in the heat, and a body that\u2014without asking\u2014starts telling you it needs something else. Space. Stillness. Lightness.<\/p>\n
And yet, even as I was listening, a part of me was judging.<\/p>\n
It kept saying others were running more. That a friend had just hit a new PR, someone else was on her fourth long run in three weeks, and me\u2026 I was just walking in the park, wondering if I actually wanted to lace up or if I was just trying\u2014once again\u2014to *keep up*.<\/p>\n
The shift came on an ordinary day. No epiphany, no finish line. Just a sunrise run, no watch, no plan. For the first time in months, I ran simply because I wanted to. No pace to check, no heart rate to monitor, no pressure to *prove* anything\u2014to anyone, not even myself.<\/p>\n
I came home drenched and happy, and realized that the feeling of freedom didn\u2019t come from running less or performing better. It came from that inner critic being silent\u2014for once.<\/p>\n
Running has always given me a lot: energy, strength, mental clarity. But this summer, it gave me something deeper. That even though running is a powerful tool for growth, it\u2019s not just about *becoming* something. It can help you be. Just be.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s like every step turned into a gentle pat on the back. A way of saying: you\u2019re okay. Even if you\u2019re not feeling strong today. Even if you stop. Even if you slow down.
\nBecause you\u2019re not the sum of your average pace. You\u2019re much more than that. You\u2019re what\u2019s left when everything else is stripped away.<\/p>\n
And in that subtraction\u2014of summer, of heat, of suspended time\u2014I discovered that being kind to yourself is its own kind of training. You don\u2019t time it, you don\u2019t post it, you won\u2019t find it on Strava. But you feel it. And it stays.<\/p>\n
Running less did me good. But judging myself less? That made all the difference. And if there\u2019s one thing I want to carry beyond summer, it\u2019s this: the freedom to be present, not perfect.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll probably go back to training regularly, chasing numbers and progress. Or maybe I won\u2019t. But now I know every run can also be an act of self-love. A way to recognize myself, not just outdo myself.<\/p>\n
