Go for a run

There are days when your mind is a tangle of thoughts, a bit like the cables behind an old stereo system. You have a problem to solve, a decision to make, but no matter how hard you try to think it through, the answer seems to elude you. It’s that frustrating feeling of having all the information in front of you but not being able to put it together in the right way.

Yet, the solution is simpler than you think and has nothing to do with hours of brainstorming or problem-solving manuals. In fact, the solution is the exact opposite: stop thinking about it and put one foot in front of the other.

Sedentary Lifestyles are the Enemy of Creativity

We live in an era where we’ve been convinced that productivity is directly proportional to the time we spend sitting in front of a screen. The more hours you stare at a blinking cursor, the better you are, right? Wrong.

Have you ever noticed that your best ideas never come to you when you’re desperately looking for them? Not when you’re in front of the computer with a thoughtful expression, not during endless meetings with whiteboards full of diagrams. The ideas—the ones that really work—arrive when you’re in the shower, walking aimlessly, or running in the park. In other words, when you’re not thinking about them directly.

A sedentary lifestyle is the cerebral equivalent of putting the engine in neutral. When you sit for too long, blood flow slows down. The brain receives less oxygen and fewer nutrients. Imagine trying to start a bonfire but only having a small spark: it doesn’t work. Synapses become lazy, and the mind just rehashes the same things, like a dog chasing its own tail.

The Brain in Motion

But what happens when you get up and go for a run? It’s the exact opposite. Your brain, while you think you’re taking a break, is actually working better.

As soon as you start to move, your body sets in motion a series of virtuous mechanisms. Your heart beats faster, pumping more blood throughout your body, including your brain. It’s like stepping on the gas of a stationary car: the engine starts and everything begins to function.

This isn’t just a romantic suggestion for creatives in a slump. It’s pure neuroscience. When you move, blood flow and oxygenation to the brain increase, especially in areas linked to memory and abstract thought. What scientists call the “default mode network” is activated, responsible for wandering thoughts, lateral connections, and unexpected insights.

It’s a bit like the mind, while the body runs, feels free to explore. The brain stops following rigid logical paths and starts to experiment, connecting distant ideas, and finding alternative solutions.

The Numbers

One of the most cited studies, conducted by Stanford University, showed that people who walk produce up to 60% more ideas than those who remain seated. Not just more ideas, but also more original, more creative, and more effective ones.

The reason? Running releases a series of neurotransmitters that are like fertilizer for the brain. Dopamine motivates you, serotonin regulates mood, but the real ace up the sleeve is BDNF—Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. This helps grow new brain cells and enhances the ability to think divergently.

Thinking divergently means exactly this: being able to evaluate different and unexpected solutions to a problem. It’s the ability to not get stuck in the same mental track but to explore alternative paths.

Even Great Thinkers Walk

It’s no coincidence that many writers, artists, and scientists are compulsive walkers or runners. Haruki Murakami runs every day, Virginia Woolf wrote about how ideas came to her while walking through London, Steve Jobs held his most important meetings during long walks, and Charles Darwin developed his theories while strolling in his garden.

There’s a pattern, and it’s convincing: running promotes what’s called divergent thinking. A type of thinking that doesn’t follow a linear logic but expands, explores, and jumps from one idea to another. It’s a free, unchained thought process.

Towards the Solution

I’m not telling you that running will solve every problem. But I am telling you that by staying still, you probably won’t either.

If you have an idea that’s stuck, a decision to make, a puzzle that’s tormenting you, put on your shoes and go. Not to escape, but to really get into the problem. Step by step, the body aligns with the thought. And something, in the middle of it all, shifts.

You don’t need to run fast or far. You just need to move. Because thoughts, sometimes, need a little oxygen and freedom. Just like you do.

The next time your head feels like an insurmountable wall, don’t try to knock it down with willpower. Stop thinking about it and lace up your running shoes. The solution might already be there waiting for you, just a mile down the road.

Got a problem to solve?
