But it also tells us that, as always, there are no miraculous shortcuts. To understand if it&#8217;s worth suffering the cold, we first need to understand what we have under our skin.<\/p>\n<h2>White Fat vs. Brown Fat.<\/h2>\n<p>Not all fat is equal. Two &#8220;teams&#8221; of adipose tissue with opposite functions coexist in our bodies.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>White Fat (White Adipose Tissue &#8211; WAT):<\/strong> This is the one we all know. It deposits on the belly and hips, stores excess energy, and, in large quantities, is harmful to health. It is a warehouse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brown Fat (Brown Adipose Tissue &#8211; BAT):<\/strong> This is the star of the moment. It is rich in mitochondria (which give it its dark color) and behaves more like a muscle than fat. Its function isn&#8217;t to store energy, but to <strong>burn it to produce heat<\/strong>. It is a heater.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Newborns have a lot of it to survive. We adults have much less (often confined to small areas like the neck and shoulders), but the good news is that it&#8217;s still there, &#8220;dormant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>How Much Cold Do You Really Need to Activate Metabolism?<\/h2>\n<p>Brown fat activates when the body perceives a drop in temperature and needs to defend itself against hypothermia.<br \/>\nWhen the temperature drops, the brain sends a signal to the BAT: &#8220;Turn on!&#8221; The mitochondria begin consuming glucose and fatty acids to generate heat (non-shivering thermogenesis).<\/p>\n<p>But how much cold is needed? Studies show that activation begins even at non-extreme temperatures (around 16-19 degrees for several hours), but becomes significant when we feel truly cold, just before starting to shiver.<\/p>\n<p>So yes, going for a run in winter or lowering the heating at home helps keep this &#8220;stove&#8221; lit.<\/p>\n<h2>The Limits of Cold Thermogenesis.<\/h2>\n<p>Here comes the cold shower (literally).<br \/>\nEven though brown fat burns calories, it doesn&#8217;t burn <em>that many<\/em>.<br \/>\nWe are talking about an increase in energy expenditure that, for moderate exposure, might hover around 100-200 extra calories per day. It&#8217;s not insignificant, but it doesn&#8217;t compensate for a poor diet.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking you can eat badly and then &#8220;burn it all off&#8221; by standing on the balcony in a t-shirt in December is an illusion. Furthermore, the body is a survival machine: if it senses you are losing too much heat, it might increase hunger to push you to recover those lost energies.<\/p>\n<p>Cold is a metabolic &#8220;optimizer,&#8221; not a substitute for training.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Use Cold to Your Advantage (Without Getting Sick).<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to exploit this metabolic boost, do it intelligently. Hypothermia isn&#8217;t necessary.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t Overdress:<\/strong> When running in winter, dress so that you feel <em>slightly<\/em> cold for the first 5 minutes. Avoid sweating excessively under useless layers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooler House:<\/strong> Lower the thermostat by a degree. 20 degrees is better than 22 for your metabolic health (and for the planet).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool Showers:<\/strong> Finishing your shower with 30-60 seconds of cool water is an excellent stimulus for the vascular system and to &#8220;wake up&#8221; brown fat, without stressing the body too much.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The cold must be respected and used in small doses.
