Ahead of the Deejay Ten on Oct. 11, together with New Balance, we have created content specifically for those who want to run it. But also for anyone who has decided to start running and wants to do it the right way.
Here we come to the highlight, the arrival inflatable, of this series of articles in preparation for My Deejay Ten. In fact, running a virtual race is quite different from participating in a physical race. You need extra ingredients, you need different ingredients.
First, it must be said that, yes, the carnal element that characterizes physical races is missing. The starting portal, all other human beings who, with you, share the same passion: running in the here and now.
But there are other elements, other valences that-somehow-make it more difficult to participate while mentally being part of a virtual human tide.
So here I am with some tips on how to approach virtual races the right way, have fun and take home especially a wonderful experience.
1. Virtual and physical race are not the same
Thank you, you will say, I really needed you to tell me because I hadn’t noticed. You are welcome, but this advice is not meant to point out the obvious, but rather to emphasize that if the assumptions are different, the expectations will have to be different as well.
You cannot have the same expectations if you start from different points.
First, there is no audience to cheer you on-except for your aunts who will be waiting for you upon arrival with lasagna already in the oven. So the external push you will have to find it elsewhere.
Equally, there is not the adrenaline component that turns you into Wonder Woman or the Incredible Hulk (citing, for the sake of parity, both DC Comics and Marvel) when you hear the “Go!” shot or when you’re in front of someone you absolutely want to reach.
And then there is no third time with friends.
You have to be aware of these things first of all because confrontation with physical competition is always just around the corner.
2. Act like it was a real race
Don’t forgo the little rituals the night before: pack your bib shirt, shoes, lucky socks, hat (if you use one), and something that sets you apart. And don’t forget the shorts-I know I didn’t put them on the list but they should be used all the time. ;)
Also decide what time you will leave and try to stick to the schedule with absolute strictness. Do you want to leave at 9:30? Do it, without a minute more or less.
In the same way, decide the route in advance and stick to it totally. It is nice and very useful to have fixed points such as time and place.
