In early September, Brooks unveiled the new Levitate 5, a long-awaited update of one of the U.S. brand’s best-selling models in the energize category. The real news, however, is that this is not just one shoe, but as many as four different variants that-while sharing the same outsole and midsole-satisfy different needs and fitting tastes with different uppers.
For Brooks users, Levitate has always been synonymous with maximum responsiveness: in fact, the patented DNA AMP cushioning system is intended to offer the greatest possible energy return; all variants have a generous 8 mm drop.
Four shoes, one heart
As mentioned above, the most interesting part of this project-which Brooks plans to gradually extend to the entire range-is the emergence of a system. Levitate 5 is what we might call the basic model, while the sister Levitate GTS 5 adds the holistic support GuideRails®, which supports the foot more, indulging the runner’s stride. Both shoes have a classic-type upper (Universal Fit), which is much lighter on the foot than it might seem holding them in your hands.
The innovations continue with the (both GTS and non-GTS) StealthFit versions: in this case, the FitKnit upper is a kind of ultra-comfortable compression sock with integrated tongue, which wraps around the foot, making it one with the shoe in part due to its special elasticity. These variants are designed for athletes who prefer aerodynamics and foot sensitivity.
