Listen to “S02E41: Start Running – Francis “Frenk” Maurello” on Spreaker.
A while back we did asked you to tell us your running story: how did you get started, what motivated you, what motivates you to continue? In previous episodes, I heard the stories of Emanuela, Roberto, and Massimo Ambrosini directly from their voices. Instead, this week we talk about coaching with caoch Francesco “Frenk” Maurello.
Contrary to what is more often the case, Francis came to running at a young age: after starting out in basketball, a chance and unexpected victory in a track and field competition led to his discovery of an interest in individual sports, after having played team sports for years.
In this regard, he sees positives and negatives in both: being part of a team teaches-especially young people-the value of group and mutual support while individual sports train people’s sense of responsibility and autonomy.
We had a wonderful chat with him, discovering a very knowledgeable person with a “classic” attitude to sports training, however young. “Classic” not in subject matter but in approach: serious, knowledgeable, light years away from the superficiality and recklessness with which self-styled expert sports trainers often pose these days. For him, first and foremost come the study, in-depth study and punctilious knowledge of the human body and its potential.
The impression you get from talking to him is of a person who knows that human beings have only the limits that their minds set for them and that his role as a trainer is to explore the performance boundaries of the athletes he follows in order to get them to overcome them. As he has said repeatedly, nothing gives him more joy than seeing one of his athletes or one of his female athletes succeed in achieving good or excellent results.
This is ultimately what makes Francis Frenk Maurello so compelling: he has boundless passion for what he does, and when you manage to take him beyond his professional composure, he does not contain himself and smiles happily, telling you how much his work is a mission, and how doing it makes him happy.
Listening is believing.

Have you sent your Lovers Mail yet?
In recent weeks we launched the second season of Lovers Mail. Participate and tell your story in our Outlaw podcast-just write it down and send it to info@runlovers.it.
It is so easy and once a month we will collect the best ones and read and comment on them during a special episode. We are not interested in the chronicles of the races but in the flow of thoughts and reflections that accompany us when, one step after another, we run.
What are you waiting for to send it to us?
