Listen to “S02E29: What can you do for the planet?” on Spreaker.
It was April 12, 1961 when a man saw something that no one had ever seen, at least from that point of view: Yuri Gagarin, whose orbital voyage was celebrated a few days ago 60 years later, saw the planet Earth in its entirety. Until then mankind had had a view of it–how shall we say–only “horizontal” or slightly elevated, standing on top of some mountain. That was the first time the Earth was seen as an immense celestial sphere. His words were, understandably, of amazement, “I see the Earth! It is so beautiful!”
Ours is a gorgeous planet, as well as being-as far as we know-the only one in our galaxy that is habitable. Better to preserve it, right?
Lately things have not been going so well: one may or may not believe it, one may or may not be a climate change denier, yet it is objectively evident that something has happened and that a balance has broken down. Extreme weather phenomena are occurring with increasing violence and frequency, perennial ice is melting, and sea levels are rising. All of these things are not particularly pleasant and very, very disturbing.
With respect to such global and giant phenomena, the common and understandable attitude is to regard them as problems that are too big and undefeatable by the individual. You observe them and just think, “I can’t do anything about it.” And instead, even in our own small way, we can do a lot: first by becoming aware of the problem and thus doing what we can to change our habits to come to change our behaviors and lifestyle.
The good thing is that changing habits, as we often tell you, is not that difficult, and in this case we do it to give our children a possibly better world, or at least not permanently compromised.
What we feel like advising you is to try to have a less pessimistic and surrendering attitude: something can be done and you (meaning all of us, as many people as possible) can do it especially. How to do it? With the advice we give you: things you can do without being a superhero or superheroine but simply by changing your lifestyle and consolidating the awareness we must have with respect to the preservation of this beautiful planet that Gagarin first saw 60 years ago.
Have you sent your Lovers Mail yet?
In recent weeks we launched the second season of Lovers Mail. Participate and tell your story in our Outlaw podcast-just write it down and send it to info@runlovers.it.
It is so easy and once a month we will collect the best ones and read and comment on them during a special episode. We are not interested in the chronicles of the races but in the flow of thoughts and reflections that accompany us when, one step after another, we run.
What are you waiting for to send it to us?
