If you settle down quickly, you can afford shorter rest without losing movement quality; if you take longer to stabilize, you need a few extra seconds, or you risk running the next exercise with technique compromised by accumulated fatigue. The Afterburn, Without the Hype
Some of the energy spent during a MetCon session keeps burning after the workout ends, while the body restores what it used and brings its systems back to a resting state. This is called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC: it’s real, it’s measurable, and it’s been documented in exercise physiology research.
What marketing tends to inflate is its size. A 2013 systematic review on resistance training examined how different training variables affect EPOC. The authors found that rest intervals under sixty seconds increase the magnitude of EPOC, but not the total energy expenditure of the session. In other words: MetCon burns a bit more after the workout than a protocol with long rest periods, but that bit more isn’t enough to meaningfully shift your daily calorie balance. MetCon remains an excellent cardiovascular and muscular stimulus, but on its own, it doesn’t guarantee a meaningful calorie deficit.
How Often Per Week, and How to Recover
Three sessions a week is the ceiling to respect, a target to build up to gradually. The Signs of Too Much Density
The morning after a well-calibrated session, your resting heart rate should be close to your usual numbers. If it stays elevated by several beats, if your sleep the night before was fragmented without an obvious external cause, or if your motivation to train drops noticeably compared to previous weeks, your training density for the week is probably too high. These three signs together carry more weight than any one alone: a single off marker can come from a thousand other variables; all three together almost never do.

Four complete rounds. Each exercise is forty seconds of continuous work. In the first round, twenty seconds of rest between exercises: the system starts fresh. From the second round on, rest drops to fifteen seconds, and in the last round to ten: it shortens intentionally, round after round, regardless of how much fatigue would call for it. That’s the variable you’re manipulating on purpose. Between one full round and the next, a fixed sixty seconds. The whole thing runs about twenty minutes, rest included.
