Leong that tracked roughly 140,000 adults across 17 countries for almost four years. Researchers measured hand grip strength with a handheld dynamometer, correlating the data with all-cause mortality and the onset of cardiovascular disease.

The findings outlined a clear, linear correlation: every 5-kilogram reduction in recorded grip strength is associated with a 17% increase in the risk of death from any cause. The decline in grip strength also correlates with a 9% higher risk of cerebrovascular events and a 7% higher risk of myocardial infarction.

The PURE study showed that measuring grip strength is a more reliable statistical predictor of mortality than systolic blood pressure. This predictive power comes from the fact that the hand’s contraction serves as a synthetic indicator of remaining muscle mass, the integrity of the motor nervous system, and the body’s degree of systemic inflammation.
