Chamonix Wasn’t First
Long-distance mountain races were being run well before Europe decided to pay attention to the format. In the United States, the Western States 100, in California, has run continuously since 1977: remote courses, arid mountains, a bare-bones setup that’s practically mythological in trail running circles today. The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc was born only in 2003, launched by Catherine and Michel Poletti, with around two hundred participants at its first edition. More than twenty-five years behind the pioneers across the Atlantic. That lack of chronological primacy makes studying its success a clinical case study in the dynamics of sporting centralization: watching a late-arriving race take global logistical control of the discipline exposes the mechanisms that govern the flow of collective interest.
From a Hiking Loop to a Race
A Route That Already Existed, Covered in a New Way
The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of Europe’s great classic hiking loops: roughly 170 km and 10,000 meters of elevation gain, crossing France, Italy, and Switzerland, over passes like the Col de la Seigne and the Grand Col Ferret. People who hike it on foot traditionally take ten to twelve days, moving hut to hut with a guaranteed night’s rest. UTMB takes the same route – with some variations over the years – and compresses it into a single, unbroken push, to be completed within a 46-hour-and-30-minute cutoff. The alpine terrain doesn’t care about the clock: the energy expenditure a trained hiker spreads out over nearly two weeks of cautious walking gets packed here into less than two days of constant forward progress against sleep deprivation.
When Demand Outgrew Capacity
From Qualifying Points to Running Stones: How the Lottery Actually Works
Global interest quickly saturated the capacity of the trails around the massif. High altitude imposes a structural limit on human traffic, bound by trail preservation and ridge-line safety: in 2016, roughly 15,000 people entered the lottery; by 2019 that number had climbed to over 26,000, competing for just 10,000 spots across all the week’s races. Faced with that volume, the organization had to build a progressive, two-stage filter.
The first system, introduced in 2009, was based on qualifying points earned by completing races certified by ITRA (the International Trail Running Association) within a two-year window. That system was revised several times and eventually replaced by Running Stones, the mechanism in place today: every race on the UTMB World Series circuit – from local events up to “Majors” like Ultra-Trail Australia or Tarawera – awards a number of Running Stones proportional to the course’s distance, elevation gain, and technical difficulty. A 20 km race grants one stone, a 100-mile race can grant up to four, and Majors double that value. Each Running Stone accumulated is one more chance of being drawn for UTMB, CCC, OCC, or the other races during Chamonix week, up to a cap of 30 stones per runner. Anyone who wins a World Series Event (top three men and top three women) or finishes in the top ten at a Major gets direct qualification instead, skipping the lottery entirely.
This structure has triggered a very real centripetal force, not just a symbolic one: to accumulate Running Stones, a runner has to race events affiliated with the UTMB World Series circuit, which gives UTMB Group a direct financial incentive to keep growing the number of partner races worldwide – from Japan to South Africa, from Brazil to Greenland. Dozens of local races that were once independent events now affiliate with the circuit precisely because otherwise their finishers would have no shot at the Chamonix lottery.
The Week’s Distances, and What They Represent
The end of the European summer brings tens of thousands of people to Chamonix, Courmayeur, and the connected valleys. Around the flagship race (UTMB, 176 km), the organization has built an entire catalog of shorter distances run during the same week: the CCC (Courmayeur-Champex-Chamonix, roughly 100 km), the OCC (roughly 55 km), the TDS (Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie, roughly 145 km), plus shorter races like the MCC and the ETC designed for those who don’t yet have the experience or the Running Stones to tackle the longer distances. Each race in the lineup divides up the effort to offer measured access across different levels of runner preparation – and, not incidentally, to boost the total number of runners paying an entry fee and passing through Chamonix that week.

Chasing a spot at UTMB or the CCC demands rigorous management of your own resources. A runner starting from scratch typically has to complete two or three qualifying races over two seasons to accumulate enough Running Stones to make the lottery a real possibility – and even with several stones banked, the draw stays a lottery, not a guarantee. You have to plan trips, budget accordingly, and time your physical form to match the fixed dates of qualifying races, often thousands of kilometers away. A sudden spring injury can mean missing the season’s qualifying races and starting over from zero the following year. A starting line set for August demands, in return, the material consumption of two or three seasons of calculations, travel, and targeted training.
