This value expresses the maximum volume of oxygen that the human body can consume per unit of time during maximal physical effort. It’s not about how fast your legs are, but how your entire integrated system—lungs, heart, blood vessels, and muscle cells—manages to convert the air you breathe into usable chemical energy.

When you run or walk fast uphill, your lungs have to capture oxygen, your cardiovascular system has to transport it, and your muscles have to extract it.   • Distortion factors: intense heat, dehydration, lack of sleep, or uneven terrain can temporarily alter your heart rate, causing the device to underestimate your actual value.
  • Classification by age: Optimal parameters vary by sex and age; the real goal is to keep your data stable or growing relative to your demographic reference group, without comparing yourself to younger individuals.

Modern wrist-based devices do not measure respiratory gases directly—an operation that requires a laboratory metabolic test using a face mask—but calculate a very precise statistical estimate based on the relationship between your heart rate and your movement speed.
