Under Armour HOVR Machina 3: perfect for long distances

For this review I want to start at the end, and I do so with a question: what are the key features when it comes to a shoe for long distances?

Comfort, first and foremost. Having to keep a shoe on our feet for so long and so far means that we have to be comfortable in it, otherwise the suffering is amplified.

Support is definitely another feature because we know that when we are tired, our support needs help to keep our foot, ankle and leg in the correct axis.

Fun, because otherwise what is the point of running? In fact, the shoe has to go along with us in accelerations, sprints and stretches, even in races.
Why do I talk about race? Because – while there are products specifically dedicated to competition – I believe that we amateurs should focus primarily on experience and less on a chronometric result. But this is my very personal opinion and we are still friends even if you think otherwise.

Duration. I don’t think much explanation is needed: if we’re going to run a lot of miles, the shoes have to last a lot.

And all these four features are found in the UA HOVR Machina 3. And one consideration must be added, which is not very functional but still important: Under Armour designers have done a great job because these are very very beautiful shoes, particularly in this “Stone / Jet Gray” color scheme.

How are they doing?

As soon as you put on the Machina 3s, you immediately feel a good feeling coming from the bandage-like shape of the upper: firm and very comfortable. The tongue is very breathable but also soft to protect the foot from the grip of the laces even on long runs where the foot tends to swell a bit.

Then you start running.

And here we need to add some technical details about how the UA HOVR Machina 3 is made. The new shell at the heel gives all the support needed to keep the foot properly aligned, while comfortable support is provided by an 8-millimeter toe-to-heel differential (the drop).

But what is most surprising in the dynamics is the smoothness of the roll. In fact, Under Armour has created a differentiated density midsole with a softer heel and more responsive forefoot, you can also see it from the different color. This also makes acceleration more fun – we were talking about this earlier, weren’t we!

It is a shoe whose sturdiness you feel from the very first stances, like almost all other reference shoes for long distance: flexibility is put on the back burner to encourage correct stance at all times. As it must be.
From a shoe that weighs 300 grams you expect just that: solidity, safety, comfort.

And then there was duration there.

The UA HOVR Machina 3s are designed to safely go 800 kilometers without having any structural failure. This, in my view, is a very important element, especially when facing preparations that involve many kilometers: we will be able to do them with one shoe.

And then there’s MapMyRun

We have already talked about it here and it is an important aspect that you also find in Machina 3. In fact, they have a bluetooth chip that connects to your smartphone and, thanks to the MapMyRun app, you will have a virtual coach who will accompany you on your outings, giving you advice and intervening when your running technique is not optimal and efficient.

It is really amazing, believe me.

Ultimately

The UA HOVR Machina 3 are really perfect for those looking for shoes for long workouts and preparations. They are suitable for any type of runner and up to medium/fast paces.
If you are looking for pure speed, maybe you should look at the UA Velociti Wind 2.
