Why we gain weight and why running makes you slim

  • 3 minute read

If you have to take it out on someone or something because you get fat, take it out on your metabolism: it is the one responsible for using your resources, for transforming what you eat. You alone are responsible for what you eat, though. You choose what to eat and what to drink. Your body reacts only by burning the calories it needs to keep itself going and storing the excess calories, in the form of fat.

You eat too much

Yes, it’s an open secret: you get fat because you eat too much (uh, what a breakthrough!) and your body doesn’t need much of what you give it. If the body is a machine and metabolism is its engine, the fuel you are putting into the tank is more than you need. In short, fuel is coming out of the nozzle, but in the case of the human body–excluding, um, getting it out the way it came in–what you eat in excess is being turned into stored fat for future use. In the belly. On the hips. On the arms. On the butt. And these accumulate, because future use is always postponed and your basal metabolic rate remains the same: that of a sedentary person who takes the car even to go to the bathroom.

Mission basal metabolic rate

To lose weight, even stones know by now, you have to:

  1. Eating less and doing it more consciously
  2. work out

Nothing new, right? Understanding why though can help you be more aware and responsible in your eating habits.

Basal Metabolism is the minimum amount of energy we need to live and keep our vital functions active. It is defined by our gender, age, height and weight. If you ate as much as you consume, you would not gain weight. If you add physical activity to the minimum of vital functions, however, your body needs more calories. So if you eat what you ate before but run you won’t gain weight or not as much as before; or if you combine physical activity with a controlled and measured diet you will lose weight. Why? Because you’ll burn everything you ingest, and once you burn that, you’ll start burning off the hated fat stores. Bye bye belly, bye bye love handles (but love will not be affected, oh no).

The memory of the body

The body is not just a machine that transforms energies and burns them. It also has a memory: if you eat a lot and rarely think you have to retain everything you give it because you don’t know but what’s coming. If, on the other hand, you get him used to eating less but often(dieting does not mean not eating!) he will retain less because you have accustomed him to a consistency in feeding. This is why it is important to eat a lot at breakfast (give the input “The day will be long and wasteful!”) and then continue eating throughout the day, avoiding heavy meals at lunch and especially dinner, when you then go to bed and the body goes into “metabolic hibernation.”

Running makes you slim

Running, like all prolonged physical activities, is an aerobic activity. Meaning? Running burns more fat than carbohydrates (or rather glycogen, the ones that give energy right away), or at least after some time, on average after 20-25 minutes of running. Not only that, by running or doing sports in general you increase your body’s metabolic demands by making it more efficient at burning the calories you take in by eating. Why? Because he knows he needs more energy since you have elevated basal metabolic rate and normally need more calories than a sedentary person. Running in short also teaches your body to optimize its consumption. For this you may enjoy-but not forever! – Of your body’s ability to burn better even if you’re not moving as much.

The perfect machine

What is the point of having a car parked in the garage and never using it? This is what you do to your body by not moving it. If you leave it stationary, it becomes weighed down, it becomes disaccustomed to burning energy, the mechanical parts no longer work well. Instead, if you move it, it is reborn and gives you back a lot: more lightness, more satisfaction, more self-esteem. And something less: excess weight.
