I had already told you about the
HOKA Bondi X
a few days ago and, predictably, they did not disappoint on first impressions. In fact, they went beyond expectations. But let’s go in order and without spoilers! ;)
Finding the carbon plate in a very cushioned, slow pace shoe might seem almost counterintuitive to speed purists but it is not. In fact, Bondi X is not a shoe that was created for the sole purpose of doing personal bests but uses carbon primarily to make the running experience more fun.
Initially, as soon as they are put on, the feeling is strange-very different from Bondi 7 or Clifton 8-in fact, the stance is stiffer because, as you might imagine, the carbon plate takes away from the shoe’s flexibility. So as you walk on it, you feel it flatter, a stiffer, in fact. The whole ero is topped off with such a comfortable midsole and upper that you quickly realize you could run in them for hours without your feet suffering.
The space devoted to fingers is more than abundant, somewhere between a normal plant and a wide one. In landing you can spread your fingers to make cushioning more efficient and natural. The mesh upper with 3D heat-fused yarns is lightweight, durable, breathable and most importantly comfortable. While the molded EVA midsole top accommodates (literally) the foot by putting it in the right position and giving it support-as well as cushioning.
And it is precisely in the dynamics that Bondi X amazes.
Born to be fun!
“Fun” is the watchword to describe these new additions to the HOKA house. Because, if we were to raise one criticism of very cushioned shoes-all of them in general-it is that they are a bit “boring.” On the other hand, they are born to protect and be comfortable.
Born from the super-comfortable Bondi 7, this version adds chili to the running sensation.
The sensations are new, different from all other shoes.
The cushioning is there and can undoubtedly be felt but the presence of the carbon plate also makes a noticeable sense of momentum in the take-off phase, amplified also by the presence of the Meta-Rocker, HOKA’s traditional curvature that facilitates midfoot support and the 5-millimeter drop.
The connection with Bondi 7 is especially felt in the feeling of protection and comfort, which are truly remarkable. With the added fun component brought by the momentum that comes from the carbon plate.
Best of all, the fun of these sensations is available to any runner, even beginners. Bondi X is very democratic in this.
“But does carbon also make it go faster?” you may ask. The answer is yes but the main purpose of these HOKAs is not that, to say it is a personal best shoe would be reductive and wrong.
Ultimately
The
HOKA Bondi X
are perfect for those looking for comfortable, soft and fun shoes, perhaps even as a single pair. Weighing 300 grams, they are in line with many other models, but-truth be told-they have no competitors in the market because of their uniqueness.
However, softness can be a hindrance when doing quality work and needing more controlled and sensitive support. In this case, I think the pairing with the HOKA Carbon X 2 is perfect to have two shoe models that are easily interchangeable and tackle any type of training.
