Body, mind and sports: why self-care matters

  • Taking care of oneself means giving conscious attention to one’s physical and mental well-being.
  • Sport is an essential tool for prevention, balance and connection with oneself.
  • Caring generates happiness and positivity that is also reflected in the people around us.

“Care” is a small word with worlds of meaning. Rooted in the Latin cura—which translates to “concern” or “solicitude”—we prefer to see it as a kind and conscious gesture toward our body and mind. It’s like telling the world—and ourselves—that we matter. And what better way to express that than through sports?

Why do we start caring for ourselves later in life?

Have you noticed how we often begin prioritizing self-care only after a certain age? This is especially true when it comes to physical activity like running. As teenagers, caring for our bodies is usually more about aesthetics—how we look, how we dress, or staying fit to impress others. And that’s okay! But there’s a shift as we age.

At some point, we stop focusing solely on appearances and start paying attention to what really matters: how we feel, both physically and mentally. Ironically, we often neglect our bodies when they’re at their peak. In youth, our energy feels infinite—we eat recklessly, sleep little, and rarely think about maintenance.

But then life throws us reminders: an ache here, persistent fatigue there, or a sobering realization that nothing lasts forever. For many, these wake-up calls come in their 30s or 40s. By then, we’ve lived long enough to know we’re not invincible, yet our upbringing often hasn’t prepared us to prioritize body and mind. Fitness is still seen as a byproduct of sports, not the goal.

Why start earlier?

Imagine your body as a finely tuned machine. Every part works in harmony, but even the best machines need regular care. Starting early—stretching, strengthening, moving—prevents problems before they arise. It’s not just about avoiding illness; it’s about forming a deep connection with your body, learning its limits, and discovering its potential.

This is a message young people need to hear. Each run, each workout, each act of self-care is an investment. It’s like planting seeds that will yield health and vitality for decades. But when you’re young and time feels endless, it’s hard to see the value in starting now.

Sports: the universal language of self-care

Sports have a unique way of nurturing both body and mind. You don’t need to be a pro athlete; even a brisk walk, yoga session, or bike ride counts. Exercise strengthens muscles, improves posture, and keeps weight in check. More importantly, it releases endorphins—those “happy hormones” that brighten your mood.

But there’s more to it. Sports are a way to reclaim time. As we mature, we start valuing time differently, realizing its scarcity. Using time wisely includes taking care of your body and mind. Physical activity is a chance to reconnect with yourself—to feel your breath, hear your heartbeat, and celebrate progress, big or small.

Self-care is like a radio signal

What does self-care have to do with radio? Everything. When we care for ourselves, the well-being we create radiates outward, like waves from a transmitter. Feeling healthy, happy, and balanced makes us better partners, parents, friends, and colleagues.

Our example can inspire others, even if the results aren’t immediate. Maybe your kids, friends, or coworkers won’t follow your lead right away, but the seeds are planted. Years later, they might bloom.

It’s like the saying:

“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.”

Caring for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s an act of making the world better, starting with your small corner of it.

It’s never too late

No matter your age or starting point, every step toward self-care is a win. It’s not about perfection—it’s about enjoying the journey. Sports are a tool for self-discovery, showing you just how much your body is capable of when nurtured.

All you need to start is a pair of comfortable shoes and the desire to take that first step. Because every step you take for yourself brings you closer to happiness. And happiness? It starts from within.
