This is a good exercise to do. Each of us follows values that give us direction. Things like honesty, trust, help, responsibility, respect and many others. There are many but some are more important to each person than others. They are so important that being able to put them into practice every day is almost impossible.
There is one thing that can be done, however, and that is to choose the ones that are most important to us. And to those give priority. The result will be that we will be able to express them to the fullest, instead of diluting them and making them less powerful. As the strongest marathon runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge, suggests.
Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge is believed to be the GOAT(Greatest of All Time) of the marathon. In an episode of the podcast “Feel Better” he shared a small exercise he recommends to all the athletes on his running team.
“In our camp I printed a huge sign with 60 of the most important values in life. I encouraged all the athletes to choose only 15 of them. After this selection they must reflect, and come to identify only 3 of them. There, those 3 values will have to guide their lives. Working according to those values. Running according to those values. Relaxing according to those 3 values. By going out with friends, always guided by those 3 values.”
According to him, it is essential to be clear about your values before starting any activity. If you feel like following the advice of the strongest marathon runner of all time this morning, you can start by choosing 3 values. Yours.
Altruism, Reliability, Adventure, Self-discipline, Authenticity, Curiosity, Courage, Community, Competence, Creativity, Enthusiasm, Empathy, Fame, Family, Gratitude, Independence, Integrity, Freedom, Order, Optimism, Perseverance, Health, Security, Power, Peace, Reputation, Humor, Truthfulness, Vulnerability, and many more.
Then, those who want to feel even closer to Eliud and his running team, can put on their carbon running shoes and run 20 or so kilometers at his average marathon pace(2’50 per kilometer in his heyday). Good luck with both exercises 👽 🔥
