How a mantra can push you beyond your limits

He reads a sign along the route that says, “If you think you can’t make it, remember why you started.” Suddenly, his mind goes back to his first workouts, to the joy of cutting small goals, to the desire to prove something to himself. With a new charge, he overcomes the moment of crisis and keeps running. It’s not magic, it’s the power of words.

The secret of motivational phrases

Every runner has his or her why, and the same goes for motivational phrases. There is no universal formula: a phrase that works for someone may not work for you. The key is to choose a mantra that resonates with your story and goals.

Some strategies for finding your mantra

  • Connect it to a memory or goal.
  • Create a short, rhythmic sentence that is easier to remember and repeat “One step at a time.”
  • It turns a negative thought into a positive one, a “I can’t do it” to a “I can do it.”
  • Take inspiration from what moves you, such as a sentence read in a book or the words spoken by an athlete you admire.
  • Use your emotions as fuel: if you are angry, disappointed or tired, channel those emotions into a powerful phrase, such as “Fatigue passes, the goal remains.”

Create your own repertoire of motivational phrases

Having a kind of “mental kit” of motivational phrases could come in handy in times of need:

  • During the toughest workouts;
  • In moments of fatigue;
  • Before an important competition.

Write them down on smartphone notes, on a sheet of paper, or memorize them to always have them at hand, or in mind.

Running involves an ongoing dialogue with yourself. Motivational phrases are not just words: they are an anchor to hold on to in tough times, a boost on the hardest days, and a reminder of why you started this journey. You just have to choose the right phrase to remind you. And never forget that no matter how slowly you go, you are still outpacing those left on the couch!
