Pros and cons of super shoes

  • 3 minute read

  • Super shoes offer speed and energy savings, but require mindful use to avoid becoming fully dependent on technology.
  • Reserve super shoes for races, alternating different shoes in training to improve adaptability and strengthen muscles.
  • Pros: greater running economy and speed. Cons: less stability and high cost.

Everyone wants them, everyone is looking for them. Super shoes are the object of desire for many runners. With innovative design and high-performance materials, they promise advantages in terms of speed and energy savings. However, to fully benefit, it’s essential to use them mindfully. Your performance, whether in training or racing, should not rely solely on super shoes: no shoe will run for you. Before depending on them, make sure you have control over your running, with total awareness and mastery. Only then can you consider their strategic use.

The “Sunday” shoes

With their design, materials, and geometry, super shoes aren’t made for everyday use. Just like a sports car isn’t ideal for grocery shopping, these shoes aren’t ideal for daily training. It’s best to reserve them for “big occasions” like races, where maximizing your performance truly matters. We’ve gone from wearing a “Sunday best” outfit to “Sunday shoes,” especially as most races take place on Sundays.

Maximize your performance with shoe rotation

One of the best strategies is to alternate training shoes and reserve the super shoes for the race. Rotating shoes allows you to stimulate your feet and legs in different ways, promoting more balanced muscle strengthening and improving your ability to adapt to running stimuli. Over time, this variety will promote more effective running economy, making you a more versatile and responsive runner.

3 pros and 2 cons of super shoes

Pro #1 greater running economy

Many of the super shoes on the market feature a carbon fiber plate, one different from the other but all with the function of aiding propulsion by maximizing energy return. The energy that would normally be lost in stance is partially returned, allowing a more efficient and smooth ride.

Pro #2 energy saving

Thanks to the combination of carbon fiber plate and high-tech foam, these shoes promote significant energy savings that gradually become more and more significant as the running distance increases.

Pro #3 you run faster

By improving efficiency and saving energy, super shoes help maintain faster paces, especially over long distances. By reducing perceived exertion, it is easier to push even in the final moments of the race.

Cons #1 less stability and more rigidity

With a higher stack, some super shoes tend to have less stability than traditional shoes. This can make it difficult to feel the ground underfoot and decrease control with each stance, increasing the impact on knees and ankles, especially on paths that are not perfectly linear.

Cons #2 the high cost

One of the biggest criticisms of this category of shoes is precisely their high cost, which does not make them accessible to everyone. Among friends, wearing certain models represents a kind of status symbol. Not having them on your feet does not identify you as a less serious or strong runner. If you can afford them it can certainly be worth considering the purchase. Alternatively, don’t make a disease out of it.

In conclusion

Choosing to use super shoes is a personal and strategic choice that can make a difference in a race, but it will never replace the value of training. If you decide to try them, remember to integrate them gradually and never rely on technology alone: it is your skills, strength, and dedication that will lead you to improve. Shoes can be an ally, but the real push comes from you.
