Train yourself to achieve social wellness

  • 2 minute read

  • Social wellness is about cultivating authentic relationships with friends, family and community to enhance health and be happiness.
  • Loneliness damages mental and physical well-being, while meaningful connections increase resilience and quality of life.
  • Improve your social wellness by practicing hobbies, exercising with others, and developing authentic relationships.

You may already work out regularly, eat healthily, value your sleep, and perhaps even meditate when needed. But there’s another critical aspect of your overall health that shouldn’t be overlooked: your social wellness, which is your ability to establish and maintain healthy, positive, and meaningful relationships with friends, family, and those you interact with daily. Social wellness isn’t just about having someone to lean on in tough times, it’s also a valuable source of support in everyday life. It’s about building and nurturing relationships, fostering interactions and support, and simply having fun with others.

What is social wellness?

Cultivating authentic relationships with others, whether friends, family or community members, keeping in touch with those around you, meeting new people and prioritizing time spent with loved ones are all prerequisites of an overall state of well-being. In the workplace, for instance, leaders play a crucial role in fostering positive interactions among colleagues. It does not matter how many relationships one has. The number of relationships you maintain doesn’t matter. What’s important is creating authentic bonds where you feel free to be yourself.

Why is it important?

It is not a luxury but a necessity. We are biologically wired to connect with each other but tend to isolate ourselves more and more. Loneliness can lead to an increased risk of depression, states and anxiety attacks. From an evolutionary perspective, social connection has been essential for survival as food and shelter. There are some clues that can help you figure out what your situation is. Try asking yourself if:

  • do you feel part of a community?
  • do you feel like your contributions are valued and appreciated?
  • do you have relationships that make you feel valued and supported?

3 aspects to work on

Building and maintaining authentic connections requires commitment. Focus on these three aspects:

1. Improve your relationship with yourself

Knowing and accepting yourself is the first step in establishing authentic relationships. Taking care of yourself is essential to strengthen the ability to empathize with others.

2. Cultivate social hobbies

Whatever your passion may be, try sharing it with other people. It can be a fun way to connect with those who share your interests.

3. Exercise in company

We can’t stress enough how enjoyable and beneficial it is to run and work out in a group. Exercising with a friend combines the benefits of physical activity with those of social interaction.

The value of social welfare

Enjoying good social wellness not only improves the quality of life, but also strengthens the sense of community, contributing to mental and physical well-being. Engaging in activities that foster social wellness is a concrete action to build authentic and meaningful relationships. Social wellness means cultivating true and deep connections, both with others and with yourself.
