Questions to ask yourself to improve your health

  • 3 minute read

  • Small daily changes such as walking more, sleeping better and eating varied improve physical and mental health.
  • Taking care of your gut microbiome and managing stress strengthens your immune system and overall well-being.
  • Stimulating your brain with new activities and listening to your body’s signals helps you stay healthy longer.

Taking care of your health does not mean disrupting your life with impossible goals or drastic renunciations. Often, it’s the small changes that make the difference. Taking one more step, sleeping better, or adding a more colorful dish to your table are simple actions that, over time, can improve both physical and mental well-being. Asking yourself the right questions can help you understand whether you’re truly giving your health the attention it deserves.

How often do I move?

There is no need to overdo it or aim for unrealistic goals. Increasing daily steps, walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator or carrying shopping bags are simple but effective actions. Each small additional movement is already a step forward.

How do I treat my gut?

Your gut hosts a community of microorganisms essential for overall health. Taking care of it means increasing your fiber intake and diversifying your diet, both in types of foods and colors. Colors like red, blue, and deep purple indicate the presence of polyphenols, powerful natural antioxidants. Prebiotic fibers are particularly beneficial for the microbiome: pectin, found in apples, and inulin, found in garlic, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria like bifidobacteria. Diversifying fiber sources helps sustain a varied and healthy microbial community.

Do I give sleep the right priority?

Sleep affects every system in the body. Poor sleep increases the hunger hormone, ghrelin, and reduces the satiety hormone, leptin, leading us to eat more and gain weight. In addition, insufficient sleep can cause blood sugar spikes and lower energy levels. In contrast, good sleep helps keep everything in balance.

How do I protect my brain?

Sleep is the time when the brain “cleanses” itself of toxins accumulated during the day. Cultivating social relationships is equally essential, as loneliness can negatively affect mood. It is also important to keep the mind stimulated with new activities: enroll in a course that interests you, read books that intrigue you, or try your hand at a creative hobby. Each new challenge keeps the brain active and resilient.

How many colds do I get per year?

The average for an adult is two to four colds a year. But a healthy lifestyle can strengthen the immune system by saving you a few. Getting enough sleep is essential, as is consuming foods that support the microbiome. It is helpful to take vitamin D from October through March to strengthen defenses and manage stress that contributes to weakened immunity. Adequate hydration is also essential to ensure proper functioning of the lymphatic system.

Am I ignoring something?

Follow the rule of three: if you notice new symptoms, a persistent change, or a combination of signs, get a checkup. Routine examinations are often overlooked. Observing one’s stool can also provide useful health clues, indicating, for example, insufficient fiber intake, a new food intolerance, or other warning signs.

Every journey, even the journey to wellness, begins with a first step. Whether it’s adding some exercise, getting better sleep, or choosing healthier foods, what matters is making sustainable, long-lasting choices. Don’t chase perfection: make self-care a daily priority and enjoy the benefits of better health day after day.
