Running is freedom (even in clothing)

  • 3 minute read

  • Tights aren’t the only option: if you don’t like them, loose-fitting running pants are a technical and comfortable alternative.
  • They offer freedom of movement, are more breathable, and are perfect for leisure use as well.
  • Choose what feels best for you: tight, baggy pants or shorts, the important thing is to feel comfortable and enjoying your run.

Spring is just around the corner, the days are getting longer, and the seasonal wardrobe switch is officially underway. Some runners have already packed away their winter layers, while others never stopped wearing shorts, even in the middle of winter. But if you’re not quite ready to expose your legs and don’t love the idea of squeezing into skin-tight leggings, there’s good news: there are technical, practical, and more comfortable alternatives. Enter loose-fitting running pants, the perfect choice for those who want to feel free without sacrificing performance.

Running in tight is not mandatory

In recent years, tight (or leggings) have become almost the official uniform of runners, men and women. They are technical, form-fitting, often equipped with handy pockets for phones and keys. But let’s face it: not everyone likes them. Some people feel constricted, some prefer not to show off every anatomical detail, some simply don’t fit in. So what? There is an alternative: wider, lighter running pants that offer freedom of movement and extra comfort.

Why choose baggy running pants?

In addition to the question of aesthetics and fit, there is a technical aspect to consider. The soft-cut pants:

  • They promote breathability: allowing more air circulation and reducing sweat buildup compared to tight-fitting fabrics.
  • They are more versatile: ideal for running, but also for pre and post workout without the need to change right away.
  • They provide uncompromising comfort: no seams that are too tight or fabrics that mark or rub, just freedom of movement.

They often have a tapered design at the ankles, to prevent the fabric from fluttering too much, and are made of ultralight technical fabrics to keep your stride effortless.

Some models to try

If you are interested in trying this alternative, here are some easy-to-find options:

  • On Core Pants: minimalist design and ultralight stretch fabric, perfect for those seeking comfort without sacrificing the technical aspect.
  • ASICS Road Pant: soft but tapered pants, great for mid-seasons.
  • Nike Phenom Elite Pants: for those who like a slightly more technical, close-fitting cut on the ankles.
  • Adidas Own The Run Astro Pants: great for cooler days, with technical fabric and relaxed fit.

And when warmer days arrive?

As temperatures rise, many will return to shorts. Again, it’s all about personal preference: some go for minimal tight-fitting designs, while others prefer split shorts or 2-in-1 models for a balance of coverage and freedom. Of course, some never stopped wearing shorts, pairing them with calf sleeves for extra warmth in winter.

What matters most is feeling good

In the end, there is no set rule. If tight pants give you a supportive and fast feel, great. But if you prefer something softer and more versatile, baggy running pants are a great alternative. In the end, the only thing that matters is feeling good and enjoying every step. Tights, baggy pants or shorts: choose what makes you feel free.
