ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28: The Faithful Running Companion Learns to Have Fun

  • 4 minute read

The ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28 transforms from a reassuring all-rounder into a comfortable, dynamic, and brilliant training companion, thanks to the new FF BLAST MAX foam that combines the model’s legendary secure and comfortable feel with a highly enjoyable bounce.

  • The switch to FF BLAST MAX foam evolves the experience: more energy, more drive, and zero boredom underfoot.
  • The heel geometry has been redesigned to ensure much smoother and more natural transitions, from initial contact to toe-off.
  • The Engineered Mesh upper is more flexible and roomy in the forefoot.
  • It is the perfect candidate if you only want to own one pair of running shoes: it balances comfort, security, and now, a healthy dose of fun.

The GEL-CUMULUS family has always held a very specific role in runners’ minds: the reliable running companion. The one that never gives you nasty surprises, that is always there for an easy run. If you wanted absolute softness, you went with the GEL-NIMBUS; if you were looking for amplified bounce, you chose the NOVABLAST. The GEL-CUMULUS was always the pragmatic choice, the shoe for those who just wanted to get the job done.

With the new model, things change. It’s as if that diligent, always put-together classmate suddenly discovered rock ‘n’ roll. ASICS decided to give this shoe a jolt, injecting it with a dose of energy that completely erases the word “boredom” from its resume, without compromising its soul.

What Changes Underfoot: The Silent Revolution

The main feature of the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28 isn’t seen; it’s felt. The midsole ditches the previous FF BLAST PLUS to introduce FF BLAST MAX foam, the same bouncy and responsive compound found in decidedly more aggressive models.

The result on the road is clear. The “tame” landing sensation of previous versions gives way to a lively, elastic, almost “bouncy” ride. It feels like there is a spring under your foot, an energy return that makes slow runs feel less tiring and tempts you to pick up the pace when your legs feel good. This is all balanced by the proven PureGEL insert in the heel, which continues to do its job: absorbing the hardest impacts and softening the landing.

Further improving the smoothness is a completely redesigned heel geometry. The shoe rolls fluidly forward, accommodating the ankle’s natural movement. It is a smoothness you appreciate when running, but also on active recovery days: those easy runs where you just want to move well and come home feeling fresh.

Upper and Fit: Flexibility and Room to Breathe

Above the midsole, ASICS has fine-tuned the “cabin.” The Engineered Mesh upper is soft, flexible, and breathable. There is a pleasant sense of freedom in the forefoot (the toe box), allowing your toes to splay naturally—a crucial detail when you cross the six-mile mark and your foot physiologically swells.

The midfoot lockdown is secure, while the heel feels slightly more voluminous than usual. If you have a narrow heel, using a lace-lock (runner’s knot) isn’t just an option: it is simply the easiest way to get a perfect fit. The only major thing missing? The rear pull tab to slip the shoe on. Some might miss it, but its removal helped stop the scale at just 259 grams (9.1 oz) for the men’s version—a highly respectable weight for such a structured daily trainer.

Outsole: Grip to Prevent Energy Loss

All the propulsion in the world is useless if you slip on the asphalt. For the GEL-CUMULUS 28, ASICS toughened up the FLUIDRIDE outsole by adding an AHAR LO rubber pad.

This means better grip (even on wet surfaces and gravel) and a more “planted” feel on the ground. There is also an additional positive side effect: the outsole provides a more stable base for the FF BLAST MAX and, over time, should improve wear resistance compared to more “foam-based” versions.

It is the perfect balance between a solid foundation and an elastic core.

Who I Recommend It To

If you told me, “I can only buy one pair of shoes this year, which one should I get?”, the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28 would be at the top of my list of answers.
I am talking about the “do-it-all” daily trainer category: those shoes that need to get you out the door every week without asking you to overthink it.

It is the exact definition of versatility. It is the ideal shoe for:

  • The beginner runner looking for protection but wanting a pleasant, effortless ride.
  • The experienced amateur who wants a reliable daily trainer to safely grind out weekly mileage.
  • Anyone who needs a multipurpose model, capable of handling the Sunday long slow run but also a medium-pace progression run on a Thursday night.

It is not a race day shoe, and it is not an absolute maximalist cruiser for those days when you barely want to get out of bed (that is what the GEL-NIMBUS is for). It is simply the shoe you will wear 80% of the times you leave the house.

The Essential Specs

ASICS states:

  • Weight: 259 g (9.1 oz) men / 223 g (7.8 oz) women
  • Drop: 8 mm (38.5 mm heel, 30.5 mm forefoot)
  • Midsole: FF BLAST MAX foam with a PureGEL insert in the heel area
  • Upper: Engineered Mesh
  • Sockliner: OrthoLite X-30 (perceived comfort and a more “premium” feel as soon as you slip it on)
  • Outsole: FLUIDRIDE with AHAR LO rubber inserts
  • Carbon footprint: 12.7 kg CO2e/pair (–12% compared to the industry average)
  • MSRP: €160

The Verdict

Updating an icon is always a risk, but with the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28, the leap forward is clear and undeniable. They took the most pragmatic and balanced shoe on the market and taught it to make you smile more every time you wear it, without distorting its nature.

If you loved previous versions for their reliability, you will find that same security. But if you were looking for something more dynamic and responsive in the past, now is the time to give it another shot. The new ride is bouncy, smooth, and fun. And all this, without ever betraying its true calling as an everyday shoe.
