Choosing the Right ASICS Road Running Shoe

  • 9 minute read

A guide that starts with how you run and only then gets to the models: nine ASICS road shoes, each with a job of its own.

  • The choice gets much simpler once you start from two things you already know: how many miles you cover in a week, and how fast you cover them.
  • For daily miles and comfortable long runs there are the GEL-CUMULUS 28 and GEL-NIMBUS 28, two different ways of thinking about softness.
  • If you want support, the GT-2000 15 and GEL-KAYANO 33 guide the foot with technology that steps in only when it’s needed.
  • For faster sessions and for race day there are the NOVABLAST 6, SONICBLAST 2, SUPERBLAST 3 and the two METASPEED TOKYO models.

There’s a precise moment when a shoe stops being an object and becomes company: it arrives around the forty-minute mark, when the body has found its rhythm and you can feel that something under your foot is working for you. ASICS has always built running shoes around that idea, and the 2026 road range is one of the most complete the Japanese brand has ever put together.

This guide has everything you need to pick yours. We’ll start, though, with the part that usually gets skipped — and that actually decides everything.

First: What Kind of Running Do You Do?

You don’t need the perfect answer. You need an honest one. Three or four easy runs a week ask for a different shoe than six sessions with hard work in them. A foot that tends to collapse inward wants help; a neutral foot would rather be left alone.

Then there’s a second question, more technical but just as useful: what do you want from the midsole, the layer of foam between you and the asphalt. Soft and springy are two different qualities, and they get confused constantly. A soft foam works like a cushion: it absorbs impact and dampens it. A springy foam works like a trampoline bed: it deforms under your weight and sends you forward. The first protects you; the second pushes you. The shoes you’re choosing between sit somewhere along that line, from one end to the other.

1. For Everyday Running: Versatility and Low Weight

ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28

If we had to recommend one shoe to start with, or to keep running in without overthinking it, this would be it. The GEL-CUMULUS 28 uses FF BLAST MAX, one of the liveliest foams in the ASICS catalog, which makes the landing soft and active rather than flat. A PureGEL insert under the heel absorbs impact, while the FLUIDRIDE outsole, reinforced with AHAR LO rubber in the high-wear zones, keeps the transition from heel to forefoot smooth and continuous.

It weighs 9.1 oz in the men’s version and 7.9 oz in the women’s, with an 8 mm drop — eight millimeters of height difference between heel and toe. It costs €160. There’s one more number worth knowing: its declared carbon footprint is 12.7 kg of CO2 equivalent per pair, 12% below the industry average.

Best for: neutral runners, daily training, anyone looking for balance between comfort and responsiveness, anyone shopping for a first serious running shoe.

2. For Maximum Comfort: When Protection Comes First

ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28

The GEL-NIMBUS is the flagship of ASICS comfort, and this twenty-eighth version has found a fine balance. The FF BLAST PLUS midsole with PureGEL under the heel delivers soft, continuous landings, the engineered knit upper wraps the foot and lets it breathe, and the HYBRID ASICSGRIP outsole holds on every surface. All of it for 9.9 oz in the men’s version and 8.5 oz in the women’s, 8 mm drop, €200 retail.

The most important update is easy to describe and even easier to feel: it’s about three-quarters of an ounce lighter than the previous model. That sounds like nothing on paper, but after the first hour of running it turns into fresher legs and a stride that stays round even when fatigue starts to show. It’s also the ASICS shoe with the lowest carbon footprint in the comfort range: 9.3 kg of CO2 equivalent per pair, 36% below the industry average.

Best for: long easy runs, the marathon, larger-framed runners, anyone who puts protection first.

3. For Support: Stability That Guides Without Stiffening

Today’s support shoes have little in common with the “anti-pronation” models of ten years ago, when a rigid wedge on the inside of the midsole made itself felt on every step, including for runners who didn’t need it. The work is now done by geometry and by foam density, which come into play only when the landing tips off balance. It’s like walking with a hand resting on your hip: you notice it when you lean, and the rest of the time it stays out of the way.

ASICS GT-2000 15

The more versatile of the two, and one of the more pleasant surprises of the year. Support comes from the 3D GUIDANCE SYSTEM, a midsole geometry that guides the foot forward from landing to toe-off, while FF BLAST MAX foam and the PureGEL insert handle cushioning and energy. In the forefoot you’ll find the same trampoline pod as the BLAST series, that shaped section of outsole that compresses at toe-off and gives push back.

Against the GT-2000 14 it sheds about three-quarters of an ounce and gains a millimeter and a half of midsole: 8.9 oz men’s, 7.8 oz women’s, 8 mm drop, €150. More cushioning, less weight, the same stability — the combination everyone wants and rarely gets all at once.

Best for: moderate overpronation, moderate weekly mileage, runners who want support without giving up light weight.

ASICS GEL-KAYANO 33

The GEL-KAYANO is the long-standing benchmark of the category, and this version introduces FLUIDSUPPORT, the new stability system that replaces the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM and spreads support along the whole midsole instead of concentrating it in one spot. The midsole is built in two layers: FF BLAST MAX on top, soft and responsive, and denser FF BLAST PLUS below, which cradles the foot and holds the structure steady. PureGEL under the heel, a redesigned engineered mesh upper and the HYBRID ASICSGRIP outsole complete the picture.

It weighs 10.5 oz (9.1 oz in the women’s version), has an 8 mm drop and costs €200. This is the high-mileage shoe for runners who need to be guided firmly, especially at the end of long runs, when fatigue starts pulling the stride apart and stability becomes the thing holding you together.

Best for: pronounced overpronation, serious training volume, half marathons and marathons run with a full margin of safety.

4. For Energy: The BLAST Family

Now we’re on the trampoline. The BLAST shoes are the most fun in the ASICS catalog, the ones that make you want to extend the loop and pick up the pace.

ASICS NOVABLAST 6

The bright daily trainer par excellence, and the most balanced of the family — you can take it into any kind of session. For the first time the forefoot trampoline pod uses FF TURBO SQUARED foam, inherited from its bigger sisters: FF BLAST MAX stays underfoot, the upper is a more breathable woven fabric, and ASICSGRIP rubber in the forefoot makes toe-off more efficient.

8.9 oz men’s, 7.6 oz women’s, 8 mm drop, €160. This is the shoe that makes even the midweek half-hour enjoyable, the one you run out of habit more than out of a plan, and it holds up without complaint when you decide to lift the pace over the last few miles.

Best for: lively daily training, neutral runners, anyone who wants one versatile, responsive shoe.

ASICS SONICBLAST 2

Arriving September 1, 2026 as the launch model of the new RISE & SHINE COLLECTION, the SONICBLAST 2 is the quality-session specialist. What’s new is a forked ASTROPLATE, a technology exclusive to this line within the BLAST family: the fork shape lets FF TURBO SQUARED foam run deeper into the midsole, down to the forefoot pod, increasing propulsion and bounce. Below it, FF BLAST MAX rounds things off with its softness.

Weight drops to 8.5 oz men’s and 7.5 oz women’s, half an ounce less than the previous model, with a midsole 46 mm at the heel and 38 mm at the forefoot and an 8 mm drop. The engineered mesh upper has been redesigned to be softer and more breathable.

Best for: intervals, tempo runs, progression runs, anyone looking for mechanical push before moving to carbon.

ASICS SUPERBLAST 3

The super trainer many consider the most complete shoe out there, and this third version raises the bar again: FF LEAP arrives, the lightest and best-performing foam ASICS has ever developed, the same one used in the METASPEED, replacing FF TURBO PLUS and working on top of a layer of FF BLAST PLUS. The forefoot trampoline pods have been redesigned for more bounce.

The result is a shoe 46.5 mm at the heel and 38.5 mm at the forefoot that weighs 8.4 oz, a third of an ounce less than the SUPERBLAST 2. It costs €220. It’s the right companion if you want a single model that can handle Saturday’s long run and Tuesday’s progression, and you’ll find environmentally minded materials in it too: recycled polyester in the upper, a dope-dyed sockliner to cut water use, bio-based materials in the midsole. For the full account of how it feels, we wrote about it in our SUPERBLAST 3 review.

Best for: fast long runs, mixed sessions, anyone looking for one shoe that does almost everything well.

Why Two Shoes Work Better Than One

If you run more than four times a week, two different models will do more for you than one expensive one. Rotating shoes with different geometries and stack heights varies your landing angles and spreads load across tendons and joints in a less repetitive way: the logic and the timing of a rotation are in our guide to rotating your running shoes. The most sensible pairing is almost always the same one: a protective shoe for easy days and a lively one for workouts. Staying inside the ASICS range, the GEL-CUMULUS 28 and NOVABLAST 6 cover the whole week without overlapping, while runners who need support could pair the GEL-KAYANO 33 with the SUPERBLAST 3.

5. For Race Day: The METASPEED Family

When the clock is the objective, ASICS offers two models with the same equipment and two opposite geometries, because not everyone gains speed the same way. Both weigh 6 oz, have a 5 mm drop and cost €270. Both combine FF LEAP foam with FF TURBO PLUS, use a MOTION WRAP 3.0 upper and an ASICSGRIP outsole that holds from the first step to the final sprint.

ASICS METASPEED SKY TOKYO

This is the shoe for runners who push from the legs and gain speed by lengthening the stride. The carbon plate is flat and sits above the FF LEAP foam, for a push oriented up and forward that helps open the stride while saving energy on every landing.

Best for: marathoners with a long, powerful stride, longer-distance racing.

ASICS METASPEED EDGE TOKYO

This is the shoe for runners who run on cadence and gain speed by shortening the time between steps. Here the carbon plate is angled forward and placed under the FF LEAP, to close each landing sooner and keep cadence high into the second half of a race.

Best for: runners with high cadence, from the 10K (6.2 miles) to the marathon.

One friendly warning before you order them: the push of a carbon plate should be introduced gradually, because it loads calves and the Achilles tendon differently than a training shoe does. We explained how to do it properly when we covered the transition to carbon-plated shoes.

One Last Thing: Listen to What You Feel

Seven of these models, all but the two METASPEED, are also available from September 1, 2026 in the RISE & SHINE COLLECTION colorway, inspired by the tones of dawn and by that part of the day that belongs only to the people who get up to move.

It’s a detail that says something about how ASICS reads running. Sound Mind, Sound Body means exactly this: a shoe exists to make you feel good while you move, and when you feel good, you almost always run better too. Try them on, put the foot down, take a few steps. The answer comes from there.
