The Pegasus is the longest-lived and best-selling running shoe line in Nike’s history, and today it covers a specific job inside a catalog split three ways: responsive cushioning, while the Vomero handles maximum comfort and the Structure handles support. For a couple of years now this family has included a version with a brighter character, built for the days when the pace picks up. That’s the Pegasus Plus, and the second generation lands in late August with a change you can see before you even put it on: a curved Air Zoom unit, exposed, set into the forefoot.
The placement says everything. That’s the exact point where the foot pushes to leave the ground, and putting an element there that compresses and reloads means working on the instant when a shoe can give energy back instead of simply absorbing impact.
Above the Air Zoom unit runs a ZoomX foam midsole, the same family of materials Nike uses in its road racing shoes. The stated combination is worth at least 18% more energy return than the first Pegasus Plus.
So it’s worth understanding how the Air Zoom unit works, and what changes for whoever has it underfoot.
What Changes Under the Foot
An Air Zoom unit is a sealed chamber of pressurized air, held in shape by internal textile fibers that join the top wall to the bottom one. Think of the strings on a tennis racket: the tension is already inside the frame before the ball arrives, so the response doesn’t have to be built at the moment of contact. Nike describes those fibers as preloaded springs, and their job is to return a larger share of the energy the foot has just put into the ground.
And shape counts as much as content.
The unit is curved, and that curvature is there to roll one stride into the next, without the step you feel when the sole under your toes stays flat and stiff. It’s the rocker principle we now find everywhere, applied to an element that works rather than to a shaped block of foam: the result is a footstrike that carries you forward at the exact moment you’re already going forward. This balance between air and foam is what generates the jump in energy return Nike claims, and it describes the shoe’s behavior better than any spec sheet.
Then there’s a line in the launch material that risks going unnoticed and is worth as much as the 18%: unit pressure is tuned precisely, and the construction changes according to size, to keep the payoff constant across every foot. Someone in a women’s 6.5 and someone in a men’s 12 don’t load the Air Zoom unit with the same force, and engineering a different tuning for each size is long, expensive work that stays invisible on the shelf. It’s probably the choice that best represents the whole project, and the one runners will feel underfoot without knowing they owe it any thanks.
Speed Without a Plate
The other important decision concerns what’s missing. There’s no plate in the Pegasus Plus 2: Nike says it went after the feel of its own road racing shoes relying on foam and air geometry alone. The direction is consistent with what research over the past few years has moved from the plate to the midsole, and for runners it carries a practical consequence worth more than any percentage.
A fast shoe without a plate can be used often. Carbon super shoes ask for a gradual introduction, because they change the load on tendons and joints in a marked way, and they remain tools for chosen days. The Pegasus Plus 2 is built for the opposite spot: the shoe you pull out for tempo runs, for progressions, for the long run that finishes fast. Inside a weekly rotation it fills the slot between the daily trainer and the race shoe — the hardest one to fill well, and the one that, filled well, changes the quality and the fun of the entire week.
The Upper, and the Feet That Have Already Tried It
The upper sits on the MR10 2.0 last, the three-dimensional mold that determines the internal volume of the shoe, already introduced on the Pegasus 42. The forefoot is more accommodating and there’s more room for the toes, while the midfoot system holds the foot in place without stiffening it. Around the ankle the materials are better finished, reflective elements help on evening runs, and underneath sits the waffle outsole with flex zones, one of the most recognizable signatures of the Portland company.
Before reaching stores, the shoe passed through the feet of more than thirty elite athletes, from top marathoners to track stars, and through the Nike Sport Research Lab, which studied how they move and what they perceive in order to steer design choices. Among them Cameron Myers, the Australian currently at the top of the world 1500m rankings, who describes loving the runs where he’s locked in and still enjoying every step, and says that’s the sensation this shoe gives him.
Deepa Ramprasad, who leads running footwear at Nike, sums up the goal as speed without sacrifice. She describes years spent working on every single ingredient of the system to arrive at exactly what runners need, and nothing else. The formula hits the real technical problem: giving a daily shoe some push without weighing it down and without making it unstable.
What We’ll Know Once We Run in It
Weight, drop, and U.S. retail price will arrive with the launch, in late August, on nike.com and at select retailers. Those are the numbers that will complete the picture, but the interesting part is already visible to the naked eye: the Air Zoom unit working at the point where the foot pushes, a racing-derived foam above it, and no plate to stiffen the stride.
On paper, it’s the most ambitious Pegasus project in years. On the road, we’ll find out in late August.
