Going out solo doesn’t change the odds that something goes wrong; it changes the margin you have to absorb it. Hence a protocol in three parts: before you leave, on your body, and in the minutes after something happens.

The same rolled ankle is a different animal depending on who’s around you. In a group, at mile five, it’s an inconvenience: someone gives you a shoulder, someone makes a call, you walk down slowly and get back late. Alone, two hours above the trailhead, that ankle becomes a question of self-sufficiency. Going out solo leaves the odds of something going wrong exactly where they were and narrows the margin you have to absorb it.
What Changes When Nobody Else Is There
With company you have two resources you almost never count: a second pair of eyes and a second pair of legs. The eyes catch the wrong fork and the storm building behind the ridge. The legs hold you up, go looking for signal, walk down to call for help. Alone, both jobs fall to you at the worst possible moment to do them — when you’re already tired. So the protocol gets built earlier, at home, with a cool head, and on the descent you keep a wider margin than usual: the technique is the same, what changes is the acceptable risk on ground you don’t know.
The Information to Leave Behind
Four pieces of information, sent to one specific person who will actually read them and know what to do with them. Better than a group chat, and far better than a public story.
- The route: trail name and route numbers, or the track shared from whatever app you use.
- The times: departure, and expected return to the trailhead.
- The bail-out point: the shortest way back to a road if you cut the loop short.
- The turnaround time: the hour you head back no matter what’s left undone.
That last line is the one almost nobody writes, and it’s worth more than the other three put together. Setting a time in advance, in front of a map, takes the decision away from the moment you’d be least fit to make it: high up, loop nearly closed, convinced there’s not much left. If you’re still below the ridge at 6:00 p.m., at 6:00 p.m. you turn around. That stretch of trail will still be there next week.
Then comes the second half of the instruction: what your person does if you haven’t checked in by an agreed hour. Call emergency services — 911 in the US, 112 across Europe — and pass on the route, the departure time and the bail-out point. Anyone in the mountains regularly can add live tracking. In Italy that means GeoResQ, the free app from the national alpine and cave rescue corps, which records your track in real time so the rescue center already knows where you’ve been; elsewhere the equivalent is a satellite messenger with tracking and an SOS function.
Protecting Your Body Before You Leave
The CDC Yellow Book, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s manual for travelers, lists the active ingredients with documented efficacy against insects and ticks, and at the top sit DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) and picaridin, also known as icaridin. They’re the same two that Italy’s Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the national health institute, recommends against ticks. Concentration matters more than brand: below 10% active ingredient, protection can run out in an hour or two, before you’ve closed the loop, while DEET’s efficacy plateaus around 50%. On a long outing my preference goes to picaridin, because concentrated DEET can attack plastics and synthetic fibers and a trail pack is made of almost nothing else. Order of application matters: sunscreen first, then repellent, never a product that combines the two.
Clothing is the second barrier, and with ticks it counts as much as skin does. These parasites don’t jump and don’t fly: they wait at the tips of grass blades and shrubs, sense the carbon dioxide and heat of whatever passes, and grab on. Brushing the grassy edge of the trail means running a line of hooks; holding the center means passing alongside it. The ISS recommends light-colored clothing, which makes a tick visible before it attaches, covered lower legs, long pants and a hat. The CDC adds treating fabric with 0.5% permethrin, which repels and kills ticks on clothing and survives repeated washes, applied 24 to 48 hours before use and never on skin. Formulations registered for fabric treatment differ from country to country, so your operational reference is the label on the product you buy.
Sun at altitude works on another scale. The World Health Organization estimates that ultraviolet (UV) radiation rises by about 10% for every 3,000 feet, because there’s less atmosphere above you to absorb it: at 6,500 feet, exposure runs roughly a fifth higher than at sea level. On glare it’s worth being precise, because grass, soil and water reflect less than 10% of incoming radiation, while fresh snow nearly doubles exposure. In August, at mid-altitude and with no snowfields around, what weighs is elevation combined with the hours you spend uncovered, more than the surface under your feet. Broad-spectrum sunscreen reapplied during the run, ears and back of the neck included, sunglasses and a visor: sun protection in training follows the same rules as down low, with a narrower margin for error.
That leaves light fabrics and water. On the second one it pays to be precise: water works on hours, not miles. Six miles in the mountains can take fifty minutes or two and a half hours, and sweat follows time and temperature before it follows distance. Measure your own sweat rate and carry the resulting volume rounded up, because the first signs of a heat problem show up in clarity of thought and coordination — exactly what a partner would spot from outside while you don’t.
The First Minutes After Something Goes Wrong
The first minute is the most valuable and almost always the most wasted. Stop, sit down and stay put for sixty seconds: sharp pain and adrenaline distort your read on how bad it is, in both directions.
Then fix your position, while your battery and your head are both still working: open the map, look at where you are relative to the trail, save a screenshot with the coordinates. That’s the information you’ll need in ten minutes, and it gets hard to recover once the light starts dropping.
Only now comes the real assessment, in four questions: how much daylight is left, how much water you have, whether the leg takes load, how far away the bail-out point is. The answer decides between continuing, cutting short, or calling. If you call, the first thing to say is where you are, before what happened. If you’re staying put, cover up: standing still, even in August, the temperature you feel can drop fast.
Above all: running solo works well when someone down the mountain knows exactly when to start worrying.
The Skin Check When You Get Home
Do the check as soon as you’re back, with your hands as well as your eyes. The ISS lists the head, neck, backs of the knees and flanks as prime spots: ticks look for thin skin and folds, so check the groin, armpits, hairline and sock line too. Clothing gets inspected, shaken out and brushed before it comes indoors, then washed.
If you find an attached tick, remove it immediately, because risk climbs with the hours it stays on. The ISS guidance is to grip it with fine-tipped tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull gently with a slight rotating motion, or to use one of the removal tools sold for the purpose, which work on the same principle. Don’t crush the body, protect your hands and wash them afterward, and disinfect the area with an antiseptic that doesn’t stain the skin. Rule out alcohol, gasoline, acetone, oil, grease, heated objects and cigarettes, because distressing the tick can make it regurgitate. If the mouthparts stay in the skin, take them out with a sterile needle or sterilized tweezers. Write down the date and place of the bite: if a reddish ring appears over the following days and spreads, or some general symptom you weren’t expecting shows up, that date is the first thing your doctor will ask for.
