- Listen to your body and adapt your routine to your daily needs to prevent the pursuit of wellness from becoming a source of stress.
- Be flexible and do not neglect sleep. Prioritize rest and agree to modify your to-do list to reduce pressure.
- Find your balance, tune in to yourself, avoid rigid rules and choose only what really makes you feel good.
The pursuit of well-being is a common goal for everyone. Everyone tries to achieve it as best they can. There are certain habits, best practices, that are associated with well-being and therefore everyone would do well to adopt in their daily lives: drinking at least 2 liters of water a day, reaching 10 thousand steps, sleeping 8 hours a night for example. The more the list strides, the greater the risk of waking up each morning already overwhelmed by the idea of having to tick off all these activities.
Wellness burnout: when wellness becomes a source of stress
Self-discipline should not be confused with rigidity. It is important to follow daily habits as guidelines to help you achieve a state of overall well-being. The mistake not to make is to believe that we cannot change and readjust these habits on ourselves and our lifestyle. The daily routine should be a means to support you in your days, not an additional commitment that causes stress.
How much is too much?
Turning self-care into a source of pressure rather than relief is likely to have the opposite effect. The state of burnout slowly creeps in, causing fatigue, irritability and loss of motivation. These signs should not be interpreted as a form of weakness. Insisting in that direction will not lead to anything good. The first step is to become aware of and recognize these signs to adjust your routine and reduce pressure. It is important to increase flexibility and be kind to yourself. Wellness is something about you, your mind and your body. Instead of following a rigid schedule, try asking yourself day by day what your mind and body needs.
Don’t feel obligated
Waking up already in a semi-state of anxiety, overwhelmed by thoughts of all the tasks to be done is not the best way to start the day. Try not to overload yourself with commitments. Select those that can give you a boost of vitality and energy. If something is not really for you, discard it and move on. Don’t cage yourself at all costs into something that doesn’t make you feel good. Routine doesn’t have to be an additional source of stress and guilt. Give yourself the luxury of choice. And if one day you don’t feel like doing anything you have planned feel free to take a day off.
Prioritize sleep
When you have little time to rest because you have too busy a routine that makes you wake up early in the morning and go to bed late at night, you may be neglecting one of the most important elements: sleep. Sleep should be a top priority in any routine that aims to achieve wellness. We focus so much on exercise and nutrition that we find ourselves sacrificing the invaluable restorative sleep, without which, however, all other efforts are in jeopardy. Lack of sleep makes every activity more difficult. One struggles to keep up with routine and make decisions. A rested mind and body work better and with more clarity.
Tune in to yourself
Try to tune yourself in, just as you would a radio station. Search for the frequency and, once you find it, listen to the music being broadcast. Although it may be difficult to quiet some annoying interference focus on how you feel in the present moment and act accordingly. Being rigid with your to-do-list will make any small obstacle or challenge seem like a big source of stress. Try managing your time differently-maybe you need to loosen up in a certain sphere and devote yourself to something else. Have you long given up going out with friends so as not to “splurge” on dinner? Maybe it’s time to give yourself a night off. It is important to accept making sacrifices in pursuit of goals, but you can also achieve a balance to be able to do everything in the right measure, always without overdoing it in any sphere.
