We’re called Runlovers, so we love running, don’t we?
What if the secret is also hating it? That’s the question Andrea asks herself this week.
If you don’t hate running a little, you don’t love running enough.
This is the claim of one of Nike’s latest advertising campaigns. Those who run know it. How many excuses is our mind able to formulate to postpone training until the next day? Too many. This is one of the reasons why when I go running early in the morning, I almost never go alone. Having a friend text you on whatsapp “operative, I’m getting dressed” is the most obnoxious thing when you’re in bed, and you want to stay there. But it will get you out of the warmth of the blankets. You can’t pull pack, it’s a nastiness. You hate running while you’re getting dressed, when you go out and it’s still dark, when for the first few miles your body would do anything else, just not to run. But then when you get home, as Adharanand Finn says “…then at home eating breakfast, for a few minutes everything seems right in the world.”
If you don’t hate running a little, you don’t love running enough.
And as the year is winding down, and everyone starts planning for 2025 races and training, here is a helpful calendar by Brendan Leonard with the ideal days on which you can train. Be careful, these are the boxes in yellow.
